Dodgers Den Week Overview:
This week in the Dodgers Den, students strengthened their writing skills, explored theme vs. main idea in ELA, expanded their understanding of equivalent fractions in Math, and launched an exciting new Solar System unit in Science—complete with an outdoor scavenger hunt adventure!
Please get a glimpse inside the classroom and some exciting moments from the week below!
**I've included a new equivalent fractions math resource with visual models that can be accessed digitally. The link is provided under math resources below.
Curriculum Snapshot:
In Math, we continued exploring equivalent fractions and began learning how to create equivalent fractions using multiplication. Students applied their understanding through a fun “pizza challenge,” where they had to meet specific fractional topping requirements. We also started exploring fractions of a set as we build toward an exciting fraction-focused week ahead!
Curriculum Snapshot:
In ELA, students reviewed important punctuation rules, focusing on using commas in dates and between cities and states/countries. We also worked hard on completing the final copies of our writing pieces that were started before the break - an important final step in the writing process. Over the next several weeks, we will continue practicing this process to strengthen our writing skills.
To wrap up our study of Ways to Make Sunshine, students learned the difference between theme and main idea, using examples from the text to deepen their understanding. We also kicked off our new novel studies, beginning Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl or Ways to Grow Love by Renée Watson. There was lots of excitement as we dove into these new stories!
Solar System Unit Introduction!
Curriculum Snapshot:
In Science, we launched our new unit on the Solar System! We began with a whole-class KWL chart, discussing what we already know and what we want to learn. It turns out we already have a strong foundation, but we also generated many thoughtful questions about planets and stars that we’re excited to explore in the coming weeks.
Students also participated in a fun two-day Solar System Scavenger Hunt, where they searched for fact cards around the playground on Wednesday and on the meadow on Thursday. This interactive activity helped introduce the unit in an engaging and active way!

Curriculum Snapshot:
During our 4 Pillars of Wellbeing time, Matt has been leading the students in a lesson focused on self-curiosity. Students have been learning how to become “self-scientists,” meaning they observe, reflect on, and learn about their own thoughts, feelings, and reactions. Through discussions and activities, students are practicing noticing how they feel in different situations. It has been wonderful to see students thoughtfully exploring how they can better understand themselves.
WEEKLY LEARNING SNAPSHOT
While TCS doesn't assign homework, many parents have requested at-home resources to support skill-building. We're happy to provide materials to help your child practice!
