First grade had a busy and marvelous time this week! In phonics, we focused on short 'i'. In grammar, we focused on ending punctuation. Additionally, we practiced our new spelling words, learned new vocabulary, compared numbers, learned about ten frames and so much more. Students also practiced mindful breathing while learning about refocusing when we have a wandering mind. We went to PE, art, Spanish, music, and technology. We had such a great time!
This week in ELA students focused on short "i". They did a word building activity, worked on their word family notebooks, did a Walk the Room Wednesday, learned new vocabulary, looked for CVC words in an "I Spy" and a puzzle game. Students also enjoyed many read alouds with Ms. Alessandra, did a character trait bubble map, and spent time browsing and exploring books in our classroom library. Students practiced writing the letters "E" and "F", and also practiced their spelling and vocab words. Awesome work, 1st grade!
This week in math, students practiced identifying numbers, writing numbers, and ten frames. We continued our lesson on comparing numbers and students had the chance to compare numbers with chalk outside! So much fun! Did you ask them about the alligator chomp? On Thursday, students did a "Think it out Thursday" activity where they went around the room and had the choice to count dots on the watermelon ten frames or compare rainbow numbers. Keep up the good work mathematicians!
This week on 4 Pillars of Wellbeing, students learned that sometimes our minds are like puppy dogs that wander around. We learned how to not let our wandering puppy dog minds take over and we practiced focusing on our mindful breathing. We are hoping that first graders will practice mindful breathing outside of the classroom!
This week in Spanish, students learned new vocabulary with Maestra Leidy and sang Spanish songs! Students had art with Principal Matt and Ms. Michelle where they learned about Pablo Picasso and created their own cubist self portraits. Lastly, thank you to Stella's mom for being our parent reader this week! Bonus -- enjoy these pictures of 1st grade. What an amazing week!
