Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This week was where the rubber met the road in a very tangible way. As a class, we have discovered that what worked for us in 1st Grade doesn't quite work in 2nd Grade. 2nd Grade requires more active focus, more self regulation, and more paying attention to details and instructions. This newness doesn't mean we aren't smart! Or that 1st Grade was bad! It means that in 1st Grade we developed a certain set of skills, and in 2nd Grade we're developing a different set of skills. Paying attention and focusing actually helps us do better work, because then we're not confused! It also helps strengthen our community, because it allows our fellow classmates to be listened to and heard.
This week in Language Arts, we started work on the ight sound! We learned words like might, sight, knight, and night! Speaking of words, Rashawn helped us create our very own flashcards for the spelling list! This is something we will be doing every Monday to practice the new words. At the end of the week, the flash card decks will go home! This will be good for home practice, because at the end of the month will be a cumulative spelling test, pulling from a few of the words in each list that month. 😊 We were also introduced to Selena Quintanilla! We learned about her family band, and that she was Mexican-American, and of course- her all star song Bidi Bidi Bom Bom!
This week in Math, we moved into our 3s timestables song! This one was a little bit easier for some of us, which is awesome! We also had the discovery that multiplcation is directly related to skip counting- how cool! In time, we continued practicing our 5 minute interval recogntion. Our small hand/big hand identification is getting better! In money, we moved on from just coins, to the 1 dollar bill as well! Whoa! It takes a little more focus, but we're slowly getting the hang of it! We also kicked off calculating perimeter this week! This is an important skill, because it further helps us develop our logic skills. It also serves as early preparation for working with problems that have multiple steps involved!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. What we focused on this week, and will be honing in on in the weeks to come, was the practice of meditation. We spent time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
For the last week or so, we've been stepping up our conversations about RESPONSIBILITIES.
We're at the stage of the school year already where sometimes we want extra privileges! We want to be trusted to be able to handle little extra fun side quests outside of the general flow of our day.
What we've learned, and been discussing, is that Mr. Josh and Rashawn would LOVE to support our side quests! To give us extra priviliges! But in order for that to happen, we must first do our part; which is taking care of our responsibilities, from desk etiquette, to lining up properly, to simple common sense choices of kindness and consideration.
Privileges are an earned team effort on both sides, and we're slowly starting to realize it's worth it to rise to the challenge!
