Hello Red Room Families,
This week in the Red Room, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month through stories and activities that introduced the children to Hispanic culture and language.
We began the week by reading The Life of / La Vida de Selena by Patty Rodriguez. The children learned about Selena, a famous Mexican-American singer known for her love of performing and designing clothes.
Next, we read My Colors, My World / Mis Colores, Mi Mundo by Maya Christina Gonzalez. We simplified the text to support understanding and introduced key Spanish color words: rosa (pink), amarillo (yellow), verde (green), and azul(blue).
Lastly, we explored Vámonos a Antigua by Patty Rodriguez, where we learned about the country of Guatemala and the small city of Antigua. The children were excited to discover a new place and its culture!
For art this week, the Red Roomers worked on several fun and creative projects in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. They began by designing sombreros, using highlighters to create a variety of lines and finishing them with colorful dot stickers. Next, they crafted vibrant piñatas using bright tissue paper and glue. To end the week, the children enjoyed watercoloring their own ginormous kites, inspired by the beautiful kite festivals of Guatemala.
This week in centers, the Red Roomers continued to practice cooperative play. In the dramatic play area, the children set up a mini farmers market where sellers offered fruit and pizza. The sensory bin featured colorful rice and vibrant little houses for imaginative play. We observed a lot of cooperative and parallel play on the rug, where children took turns and communicated with one another.
This week in Music Class, the Red Roomers had a wonderful time participating in a variety of engaging activities. On Monday, they enjoyed dancing to Try Everything by Shakira, which brought lots of excitement and movement to the classroom. On Wednesday, Ms. Lauren introduced Fermata the puppet, which the children loved. They also had the opportunity to play tambourines and drums, exploring rhythm and sound through hands-on musical play.
On Tuesday, the Red Roomers celebrated Theo’s 3rd birthday. A big thank you to Theo and his family for the delicious cupcakes! Theo also brought in mini pumpkins to share, which were especially meaningful as they were grown by his grandma in her own garden. What a thoughtful and special way to celebrate!
