This week was all about Halloween! We read silly, spooky Halloween stories, got dressed up, and immersed ourselves in art and activities that brought out the joy of the season in all of us!
This week we got into magnets! Magnets are a wonderful part of play-based learning; especially when they're presented as flying ghosts and bats! Students may wonder why some things stick and some do not. This offers our young scientists the chance to do some sorting and begin to learn about magnetism.
Halloween art is just so much fun! Students love to see their creations come to life. This week, we had a ghoulishly great time creating Halloween collages on paper plates and decorating our Trick- or-Treat bags with cookie-cutters and paint! Then, we made Shape Witches and Haunted Houses!
Many of our circle times centered around what our kiddos are going to be this halloween, and we talked about different kinds of costumes that people wear. We asked, "What are masks? If they change how we look, do they change who we are underneath?" All the children lined up to see themselves in different masks!
While our outdoor time is a mostly unstructured time, it's an important part of your child's development. Young children are working on agility, cooperation, turn-taking, and large motor development. Being outdoors isn't just FUN, it also supports a child's mental health and mood regulation and boosts cognitive development and flexibility. So, running around outdoors sure does the whole body good!
Our kiddos are so capable! They are beginning to see themselves as competent contributors as they help tidy up and support their friends along the way.
Ms. Lauren had all kinds of Halloween songs with movement for us to sing this week like, "Fly, Fly, Fly Little Bats", and other holiday classics! Our whole week was filled with themed music both in and out of music class :)
Here are some of the themed books we read this week!
The Day of the Dead is a celebratory holiday where families welcome back the souls of those loved ones who have died. People honor those who have passed by creating ofrendas or alters, with photos, flowers and food. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, we decorated some skulls, generously donated by Violet and family. Thank you so much!
Thank you to everyone who helped make our Halloween event such a success!!!
This week, we learned to mindful of the things we see by narrowing our focus and taking time to observe the world around us a little more closely. We looked at natural materials like bark, leaves and twigs on the field, and we played a game where the children studied a group of objects gathered together for circle time. The teacher covered the objects with a cloth and removed one object. The children then had to look at the remaining objects and see which one was missing!
Have a safe Halloween and a wonderful weekend,
Renée & Kate
