Quote of the Week
"This stick knows everything." (Penelope)
This week we delved into the world of Pumpkins! We talked about the life cycle of a pumpkin; how they first begin as seeds, turning into sprouts and growing into vines with flowers, before ending up as a pumpkin.
Our week began with rain, so our indoor activities included some large motor movement, fun with songs, and dancing to keep us moving!
This week had us busy with flax seeds, measuring cups and early calculations of, "what happens if..." We played with a variety of blocks, creating patterns and towers and practicing balance, color sorting, and cooperation!
Pumpkin art was a big hit, with individual expression in full force. We made different kinds of Jack O' lantern faces while working on our small motor skills and exposure to different shapes. We're practicing eye-hand coordination and exploring our individual creativity. At the end of the week, we finished with Patchwork Pumpkins and ONE GREAT BIG PUMPKIN, where we decorated with high sensory materials, all contributing to its beauty!
The kitchen was open! We had cooks and servers and lots of hungry kid patrons in our restaurant this week.
Some of our boys made it their job to take good care of their babies, being sure to dress them up and feed them when they were hungry.
And we opened up a Mechanic's Shop where we fixed up a broken down car with our tools!
Once the rain stopped, we were eager to get back outside to run and move our bodies!
On Wednesday, we welcomed a generous guest reader, Reesha, a dear friend of the Branand family. She came in to talk about the Hindu Festival of Lights, better known as Diwali. She read a beautiful book called, "The Light Within You." Reesha was dressed in a stunning Sari and told us all about how the holiday celebrates light above darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
Teacher Lauren practiced tempo with us, teaching us to recognize fast from slow, as we used sticks to strike different tempos as a group.
Here are some of the themed books we read this week!
Living in California means living with the idea of earthquakes and being prepared. We practiced ducking and covering our necks to keep our bodies safe in the event of an earthquake.
This week in Pillar 1 (Mindfulness), we practiced the mindfulness of smell where we talked about how our noses take in smell and how some things smell sweet, sour, strong or soft. We also took time to investigate how things taste, whether they are sweet or salty, crunchy or smooth.
Taking time to pause and breathe is an important part of teaching our little ones to slow down and intentionally observe our surroundings and connect with our senses.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Renée & Kate
