This week in the Green Room, the children learned all about harvest foods and the meaning of thankfulness. To support this theme, we read The Thankfulness Book by Todd Parr. Through this story, the children explored what it means to be thankful for something or someone, and many shared heartfelt examples—feeling grateful for their moms, dads, homes, and pets. It was absolutely sweet to hear their thoughtful reflections.
We also created a festive fall leaf wreath to help our classroom feel more in season. For inspiration, the children looked at the book Look What I Did With a Leaf by Morteza E. Sohi
In addition, the children learned all about corn—how it grows, how it’s harvested, and who harvests it. To deepen their understanding, we read Corn by Gail Gibbons.
On Wednesday, the children joined Teacher Nancy for a reading of Berry Song by Michaela Goade. They especially loved making a pie with her and creating their own pie craft on Thursday.
Even though the week was a wet one, we made sure to keep spirits high with plenty of fun and active indoor movement activities.
Until December,
Karla & Nancy
On Monday, we kicked off our theme of thankfulness with The Thankful Book by Todd Parr. The children loved hearing about all the simple things we can be grateful for—like music, family time, bath time, and even the very silly idea of wearing underwear on your head! The book brought lots of smiles and helped us talk about gratitude in a fun, lighthearted way.
On Tuesday, the creativity really bloomed! After reading Look What I Did With a Leaf, the children couldn’t wait to make their own fall leaf wreaths. Since they had collected leaves last Friday, they were eager to use their special finds. With sticky fingers from the Mod Podge and big imaginations, they arranged their leaves in all kinds of creative ways. They even added colorful faux leaves to give their wreaths extra pop, texture, and personality. The classroom was filled with excitement—and lots of happy, leafy artwork!
On Tuesday, we all read a very special book together: Corn by Gail Gibbons. In this story, we learned where corn comes from, how it grows, and why it’s such an important crop. The book shows the entire life cycle of corn—from planting seeds to harvesting tall corn plants—and explains the different types of corn and the many ways people and animals use it for food and other products. With clear illustrations and simple explanations, the children gained a strong understanding of how corn is grown and its significance across the Americas.
After reading, the children explored a variety of real corn and touched the kernels on the cob to observe the different types and textures. To bring the lesson to life, they created a fun corn craft using paint and bubble wrap to mimic the look of corn kernels. They carefully pressed the painted bubble wrap onto their yellow cobs and peeled it away to reveal beautiful, textured corn art! It was a wonderfully hands-on and meaningful experience.
This week with Teacher Nancy, the children joyfully dove into making a berry pie using many different kinds of berries! Everyone had a chance to take turns cutting, mixing, and stirring. On Thursday, the children even had the opportunity to create their very own individual berry pies, each one bursting with colorful, delicious berries.
The book Berry Song by Michaela Goade was the perfect tie-in to our activity. In the story, a young girl and her grandmother explore the land they love on their island by the wide, wild sea. Together, they gather gifts from nature—salmon from the stream, berries from the forest, and herring eggs from the ocean. As the seasons change, they sing to the land, and the land “sings” back, reflecting its beauty, abundance, and the deep connection between people and the earth. Their journey beautifully honors gratitude, family traditions, and the magic of nature.
It was a meaningful and memorable experience, and the children had so much fun connecting the idea of abundance and harvest as they made their own pies—enjoyed à la mode on Wednesday to end the day with delight!
This week with Teacher Lauren, the children explored drums and enjoyed moving to the Balance the Beanbag song! On Monday and Thursday, they were also hard at work practicing their songs for the Winter Sing. This year, they will be performing “This Little Light of Mine” and “Frosty the Snowman” by the Jackson 5! Their joy and excitement have been shining through with every practice. 🌟
This week our sweet Siena was absolutely thrilled to have her mommy, Kristen, visit as our library guest reader! We enjoyed a wonderful trio of books together.
We began with I Am a Cat by Galia Bernstein, a charming story about Simon the house cat who meets a group of big cats—and helps them realize that despite their differences, they’re all cats just the same!
Next, Kristen shared My Tree and Me by Jo Witek, a beautiful tale of a little girl who watches her backyard tree change through the seasons. This sparked lots of smiles as the children connected the story to the big, colorful trees on our very own campus.
Finally, we read Umami by Jacob Grant, the delightful story of Umami the penguin, who is tired of eating cold fish at every meal and decides to explore the world in search of new flavors!
Each book sparked curiosity, joy, and meaningful conversations among the children. Thank you, Kristen, for such an enchanting and memorable story time!

While we stayed dry outdoors during the rainy weather, the children had a wonderful time building strength and confidence on the parallel bars. It was a week filled with excitement, laughter, and joyful reunions!
This week at centers we explored our centers with sensory play, math centers, puzzles, art and more.

We are thrilled to share that our preschoolers have raised $6 so far for our sweet animal at The Wildlife Learning & Conservation Center! Thank you, parents, for sending in all those aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Each morning, the children have been so excited to walk in and proudly show us their recycling contributions—it has been such a joy to see their enthusiasm grow.
Please continue to bring in more bottles and cans as we work toward our goal of $50. In class, we’ve even started a barometer to measure our progress, and the children can’t wait to watch it climb each week!
Thank you for supporting our Service Learning Project and helping our preschoolers make a meaningful impact!
