This week in ELA we continued our lesson on adjectives. To practice, students did a flower craft where each petal included an adjective that described them. In phonics, we learned how to read long e vowel sounds with "ee" and "ea" spellings. To practice, students did some word building, Walk the Room, and reading practice. As a class, students practiced their short and long vowels, blends, digraphs, spelling, and read a story with this week's phonics spelling patterns. 1st grade also had centers where they rotated between small group time with Ms. A, phonics puzzles, phonics find its, and did sentence & picture matching. Students learned new spelling words, vocabulary words and practiced both by writing sentences. Way to go 1st grade!
This week in math, students learned how to read picture, tally, and bar graphs. We also practiced how to count and write tally marks. As a class, students did a warm up about reading graphs. In math centers, students rotated between small group time with Ms. A, number bonds cut & glue, completing 1-120 chart puzzles, a roll, solve, color worksheet, and checkers with a math worksheet. We practiced addition and subraction fluency. 1st grade also did Think it Out Thursday where they went around the room and counted tally marks. Amazing work, mathematicians!
Students went to Spanish, art, music, and PE this week. In social studies, students learned about Women's History Month. This week we focused on the ethologist and conservationist, Jane Goodall. In art, we created spring time bears and learned new techniques to create texture in our art work. We are so proud of 1st grade!
