Happy Women's History Month!
This week in ELA we learned where commas belong when writing dates. In phonics, we learned how to read long i vowel sounds with "igh" and "ie" spellings. To practice, students did some word building, Walk the Room, and reading practice. As a class, students practiced their short and long vowels, blends, digraphs, spelling, and read a story with this week's phonics spelling patterns. 1st grade also read a story with Ms. A and completed a venn diagram, phonics find its, and did sentence & picture matching. Students learned new spelling words, vocabulary words and practiced both by writing sentences. Way to go 1st grade!
This week in math, students learned how to measure with nonstandard and standard units. To practice, they measured objects around the room using cubes, tiles, and paper clips. They also measured objects with a ruler using inches and centimeters. As a class, students did a warm up to practice measuring with nonstandard and standard units. They also practiced measuring by creating their own city using a ruler. 1st grade did a Think it Out Thursday where they went around the room and measured lines with a ruler. Amazing work, mathematicians!
Students went to Spanish, art, music, and PE this week. In social studies, students learned about Women's History Month. This week we focused on the former Vice President of the U.S. Kamala Harris and the environmentalist Wangari Maathai.
