This week was full of hands-on learning and exciting progress! In science, we had our first lab with Mr. Bill, exploring the life stages of a bullfrog, Hercules beetle, gray squirrel, and ostrich to practice sorting and identifying which picture didn’t belong. In ELA, students continued drafting their pond stories and practiced spelling in preparation for our first quiz. Math time focused on building multiplication fact fluency and deepening our understanding of place value by comparing numbers and converting between standard, expanded, and word form. In social studies, we kicked off our Hispanic Heritage Month by beginning research on inspiring leaders.
This week in ELA, our fourth graders continued exploring Opinion Writing by sharing their favorite seasons and explaining their reasoning. We also learned about capitalization using the M.I.N.T.S abbreviation (Months, the word “I,” Names, Titles, and the Start of a sentence) to help us remember when to capitalize. Then, we kicked off our first novel study of the year Holes by Louis Sachar which has already sparked plenty of curiosity!
In Social Studies, we began a special Hispanic Heritage Month project, creating piñatas after learning about artist Roberto Benavidez. In Science, students continued their study of the fascinating frogfish and also discovered the Coquí frog as part of our Hispanic Heritage celebration.
This week, the Combo Crew was introduced to a new morning meeting game called “Boom, Clap, Snatch” — a fast-paced activity that put their quick thinking and reflexes to the test!
This week, students continued exploring the Mindfulness Pillar. The Combo Crew focused on eliminating distractions while practicing mindful posture. During an outdoor activity in the meadow, students were challenged to listen carefully and notice the farthest sounds they could hear — all while a student played the tongue drum to guide their focus. It was a wonderful exercise in stillness, focus, and observation!
EMERGENCY FOOD STILL NEEDED
We still have not received several bags of emergency food, and we need it as soon as possible. Please be sure to send in your child's emergency food right away so we can have them on hand in case of an emergency.
WEEKLY LEARNING SNAPSHOT
While TCS doesn't assign homework, many parents have requested at-home resources to support skill-building. We're happy to provide materials to help your child practice!
