Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! What a splendid week we've had. There are so many things happening concurrently, that it's hard to believe we're actually approaching the culmination of this journey we've been on together. The kids keep trying to start the "I'm gonna miss you so much!" chat, and we are dodging left and right. Because once one of us starts crying, we're ALL going to start crying. lol Shout out to Beau, who served as Head of School on Monday! His term was short, but honorable, and filled with the essential ingredients for good times! Under his care and direction we had cotton candy, an ice cream truck, and a teacher mandated "no math" day! The kids cheered and smiled bigger than ever at not having to do any math, but I'm sure they were devastated.
'Thank you all for coming through our room during Open House and making it a good time! And it was lovely meeting all of the Grandparents and Special Friends between Open House and Grandparents and Special Friends Day! The apples aren't falling far from the generational trees at ALL. Love to see it. 🤗 We sang our Super Dream song for them, did a drawing activity, gave them a taste of Spring Sing by singing "A Million Dreams," and then we closed by sharing one thought on the movie making process, before we played the first 4 and a half minutes of the movie!
Shout out to Stoklee for the annual level up!! Happy birthday!! Hope you're having a fun celebration!
This week, we had some classroom heroes who were inspired by last week and stepped up their game! Carmella, Easton, Maya, you went above and beyond!! Congratulations!
Thank you Sasha for being our Library Reader this week! It's so cool that you brought back a book we hadn't finished before, and then finished it with us! That was really sweet and thoughtful. And, of course, the accents and voices were just icing on the cake! Thank you so much!
This week in Language Arts, we continued practicing our Spring Sing songs every morning, some of which involves having to read the lyrics in real time, which assists in developing our fluency. We played our spelling game, to get a little refresh on our spelling words. We moved into full on writing out our scripts as well! We learned the core elements for screenwriting: INT/EXT, ACTION, DIALOGUE. Wtih a handle on these three, any script can be written on a fundamental level. This process has also given us another opportunity to practice writing in a specific format; a necessary skill for the grades and years to come.
This week in Math, we contined our practice of singing through all of our timestables songs at least twice, each day this week. We've been working on our multiplication facts, trying to increase the fluency of recall a little bit more each week. We stayed in the pocket of working out word problems, shopping problems, perimeter/area, and place value. The throughline skillset requirement for each of these is reading the directions. Many of us ran into the obstacle of not taking the time to read the page and consider what was written, than we did run into an actual inability to do the work itself. Some of you may have noticed there might a page or two incomplete in the work they bring home and that's quite alright. At this point of the year, it's more about conditioning than actual "game play." We want to make sure they can do the thing when called upon, rather than the usual emphasis on showcasing their maximum ability every week. It's a dance!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
GRACE.
Feelings are running high at this point of the year. It's quite common. We're a close knit group of people who share the majority of our lives together every single week. We have multiple productions unfolding all at the same time. The juxtaposed premonitions of both our time coming to an end and the freedom of summer are hanging thick in the atmosphere.
People are going to get on our nerves. We're going to take things personally that we normally might not, and so will those around us. What is needed more than ever during this time is grace for mistakes, both accidental and impulsive/thoughtless. We can feel our feelings, but there needs to be an added intention (after all necessary conversations have been had, of course) on not letting it blossom into anger or resentment.
This is what we discussed as a class at the beginning of the week. We unpacked everything we have going on, and acknowledged the work and energy it takes to accomplish these many things. Grace. It does not mean we don't get hurt feelings, or that we don't end up hurting other people's feelings; it means we default to the love at the center of the relationship. I know you care about me, and I care about you, so- how did we get here? Let us speak honestly, hold space generously, and move forward together in realignment.
