Happy Weekend, 2nd Grade Families! Wow, what an INCREDIBLE movie premiere we had this week! All of the cast was dressed to the 9s, which was perfect for our red carpet and photography. Shout out to Holly for volunteering the TCS backdrop! That really helped seal in the moment that the kids got to experience. Another shout out goes to Paul for the Red Carpet interviews! That was completely adorable and filled that opening space so well! The kids loved that moment! Superb thanks to all of you parents for making this possible! Without your collaboration, there would have been no theatre rented to host this incredible moment, so thank you endlessly from the bottom of my heart. And I also want to send out a very special recognition to Sasha! In the final moments leading up to the premiere, there were a lot of back and forths about technical issues and she was on site for all of it. You sacrificed your schedule to pull this off, and we are all so very thankful. This was a group effort from top to bottom, and it paid off in the best of ways. Also, shout out to Christopher Nolan for passing through our post screening photo shoot! What the are the odds!
We did have a Hero of the Week this past week, but I will save that for Monday, so that we can give the proper shout out and acknowledgments. The only reason we did not do it this Friday, was because so much of the class had been picked up early for the premiere. But first thing Monday morning, we will handle that!
And speaking of Heroes of the Week, the photo of Zahara is attached to this week's newsletter!! She won it last week, but due to Mr. Josh moving too quickly with the data transfer from phone to computer and then deletion, the photo didn't make it... so we're including it this week, because Zahara worked so hard last week and she absolutely deserves to be seen. And double shout out to Zahara for winning "Best Cosplay" in the anime class! Woo!
This week in ELA… we took it easy once more as we head into our final week of school. We did multiple journal entries, where we wrote a paragraph about our feelings. "I Noticed, I Felt, It Seems Like," have been our class prompts, and we all wrote two sentences for each of them. We also filled out multiple worksheets practicing nouns, verbs, and adjectives. It's so easy at the end of the year to feel like we don't remember much, so we've been reviewing the basics, to build confidence and to seal it in for the rest of the year.
This week in Math, we took it easy as well for all of the aforementioned reasons. We practiced our multiplication song every day this week. We reviewed borrowing and carrying, and calculating money. We also tackled word problems, just to remind ourselves that we are capable of reading and processing number problems. We also received a 3rd grade level math overview to work on (even though we didn't know it at first), and we performed brilliantly! There were some challenges, but we operated as 3rd graders, and Mr. Josh and Rashawn were so proud!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
CLOSING OUT.
The beautiful thing about family and close friendships is the intimacy. The difficult thing about family and close friendships is also the intimacy. Knowing, and being known, up close is one of the most powerful and invigorating feelings in the world. However, when we're extraordinarily close to people, that also means that we come familiar with their flaws, shortcomings, and irritable ticks.
2nd Grade, as wonderful as we are, is no exception to this divine rule. This week, there was some heightened snippiness and lowered patience amongst the crew. While normal, this eventually reached the point where it had to be addressed.
The address was simple. It was an inspirational reminder that we're still a team. That we still value and love one another. That none of us desires to close out this year with negative energy or in-fighting.
On Friday, we had this speech followed by a pivotal moment. We had a hard reset. Sometimes the only option is to turn the machine off and turn it back on again. We agreed to do that as a class, and it turned our entire day around. This is the spirit with which we shall close out the year. United.
HERO OF THE WEEK!!
