Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! What a very fun and special week we had! Some of us had a great birthday outing celebration, while some of us had a chill day in class that day! We filmed our movie, and have really found a great groove and flow! We played Around the World this week, and had several Most Improved Players. We're reading more smoothly and our writing is looking rather lovely as well. We also had our FIELD TRIP, which was an absolute blast!! So much fun and inspiration took place. Then we wrapped this stellar week with the TCS annual classic- Parents v Teachers Basketball game! Sadly, the teachers did not walk away with the W this time, but it was still a fun game!
Thank you Bobby for being our Library Reader this week! We really enjoyed the energy you brought to the reading, along with the stories. You have a very calming, yet very entertaining presence. Thank you!
This week in Language Arts, we did a little bit of everything to remain in step with the unusual flow of the week. We've been practicing our Spring Sing songs every morning, some of which involves having to read the lyrics in real time, which assists in developing our fluency. We worked on our practice paragraphs, to keep our hand strength in the pocket with our writing. We also did some generative work, which focused on us writing complex sentences. It's easy to write something like "The picture is very cool." It takes a little extra intention to write something like "The colorful picture looks very cool, because it has flying tigers." It's a small tweak, but an essential one in the construction of our expanding literary prowess.
This week in Math, we contined our practice of singing through all of our timestables songs at least twice, each day this week. We've been working on our multiplication facts, trying to increase the fluency of recall a little bit more each week. We played "Around the World," which is the friendly math facts compeitition game, where two students are shown the same flashcard and whoever answers first progresses to the next person. The goal is to make it "around the world" and back to your original seat! We also broke out the Willpower Wrap Ups this week, which are our review math packets. They're shorter than our usual math packets, but they cover a much wider array of material. This week, we also played Math Jeopardy! It's another way to bring some fun into the classroom during these final weeks of school, while also practicing the many things we've learned over the year.
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
FIELD TRIP.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is truly a magical place. Each of the five floors are filled with all of the wonder of human ingenuity in the world of filmmaking, from the very beginning to present day. It's a living time capsule, tracking what makes the visual art of storytelling so precious to humanity, while illustrating what a healthy relationship between humankind and technology should really be.
Our class was split into two groups (one went with Rashawn, and the other group with Mr. Josh). Each group had their own tour guide, which took us through the exhibits for Beauty and the Beast (2017 version) and Barbie! We learned about concept art, props, and backgrounds! We saw the actual model set used in the Barbie movie, and the magic rose from Beauty and the Beast!
After the official tour portion, we visited different parts of the museum! There was a Jaws exhibit, an exhibit dedicated to Ponyo, an exhibit showing the costumes from a number of movies including The Wizard of Oz, and so much more! The kids really connected to the trip, and there were a few who had a very particular sparkle in their eye. That sparkle which says "I am home." 2nd Grade is where dreams go to bloom.
