Hello Red Room Families,
This week in the Red Room, we learned about two amazing women for women’s history month. Kalpana Chawla was the very first woman born in India to fly into space, traveling over 10 million miles. Known to friends as "K.C.," she loved airplanes from a young age and grew up to become a NASA astronaut who flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia, making her a real-life space explorer who chased her dreams.
Pura Belpré was a trailblazing librarian, author, and puppeteer who became the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City. She championed Spanish-language books and brought vibrant Puerto Rican folktales to life, ensuring children saw their culture in libraries. She loved using puppets to make stories magical.
This week in art, we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. We painted the children’s hands in rainbow-colored paint to represent a rainbow coming out of a leprechaun’s cauldron filled with gold coins—only theirs was gold glitter.
For our second art project, the children had a blast making fun, colorful necklaces using bright Fruit Loops and a four-leaf clover they colored themselves.
For our first Women’s History Month art project, the children had fun creating space-themed artwork! They used space-themed stamps to design the background on construction paper, then added a space shuttle cutout they colored using blue and purple crayons.
Our second Women’s History Month project was making our very own puppets out of brown paper bags in honor of Pura Belpré! The children had so much fun using glue, buttons, and foam letters and numbers to decorate their puppets. They also used crayons to draw colorful hair and add their own creative touches.
This week in centers, the children had a fantastic time! They especially enjoyed using the Magna-Tiles on the rug—building creative structures with friends or independently alongside one another. They also put on their own puppet show like Pura Belpré.
At the manipulatives table, the children explored with space-themed figures, rubber stone rocks, and magnetic foam, letting their imaginations take off. They also had fun stringing large beads and working on puzzles together.
To match our St. Patrick’s Day theme, we used bright yellow and green Unifix cubes. Some children worked on connecting robots to create their own creative looking robots—many of which were incredibly creative and fun to see! Our green rice sensory bin, filled with fun St. Patrick’s Day objects, was a big hit!
The children had a wonderful time enjoying outdoor play in the warm, sunny weather! We stayed cool by spending as much time as possible in the shade while still making the most of our time outside.
They had so much fun playing with friends at the outdoor table using connecting cubes, drawing at the easel, spinning each other on the strawberry spinner, riding tricycles, and exploring in the sandbox. The turtle statue was a popular spot for jumping and climbing, and the children loved getting creative with puppets and cooking up imaginative meals in our outdoor kitchen on the patio.
We also enjoyed time in the meadow—running freely, playing together, and relaxing in the shade. It was a joyful week full of fresh air and fun!
The children enjoyed a day filled with opportunities to explore and learn about different cultures. During our time there, we visited the Teacher-Parent Booths, where the kids viewed poster boards featuring countries such as Italy, Guatemala, Mexico, Armenia, Trinidad, and many more.
At the Middle School Diversity Village, students proudly displayed their own poster boards and spoke with the children about various places around the world.
The Global Potluck was another highlight of the day, giving the children a chance to come together, share a meal, and sample a variety of delicious foods.
During the drum circle, the children enthusiastically participated by playing different instruments and joining in dancing with their preschool friends.
This week in music class, Teacher Brian led the children in singing fun songs like “By the Bridge,” “Down by the Bay,” “Follow the Leader,” and the lively “Rattling Bog.” They also had a great time playing an exciting Grizzly Bear game! The children continued practicing their songs in preparation for the Spring Sing, and their enthusiasm is really shining through.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to Ramy’s mom, Susan, and dad, Dave, for joining us to read and celebrate Ramadan with the Red Roomers! They shared a wonderful and sweet book with us, The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Eid by Eric Carle, and brought along some delicious treats. The children enjoyed trying maamoul (a date-filled semolina cookie) and sprinkled donuts. Everyone had the opportunity to choose what they wanted to taste and explore new flavors!
