Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! Round of applause for the whole class completing their Black History Month portfolios this week! They worked hard all month, and there were so many steps involved. However, they were all very enthusiastic and loved all of the information they gleaned about the person they studied. Once the portfolios were complete, each child also did a small presentation in front of the whole class! They prepared their notes and stood up there like professionals. After everyone had presented, Mr. Josh informed them that public speaking is the #1 fear in the world for the majority of people... and they took it head on!! Que bueno!
Special shoutout to LaNina for bringing us an Anansi origin tale! It was mystic, and exciting, and rich with interesting lore. We also enjoyed the image printouts held by Stoklee and Kingston. Such a great time!
This week in Language Arts, we took a pause from our regular packets to work on our storytelling and using our spelling words in complete sentences. We're still getting the hang of structuring our own tales in a way that makes sense, and is legible, so this was a good sort of "break" for us. The other reason we took a pause from our usual packet work is because we were completeing our Black History Month portfolios! Considering that a large amount of the project involved reading, analyzing, and writing, it still served our ELA needs just fine. Even something as seemingly simple as copying a passage onto our line paper, requires a great deal of focus. Did we skip words? Are the paragraphs floating? Did we capitalize letters in places they shouldn't be? We fine tuned all of these skills and more through the completion of our BHM project!
This week in Math, we continued practicing our timestables! The goal is to develop as much fluidity as possible, so that working our equations becomes that much easier. We've also begun practicing simple multiplication word problems to assist with the retention of our timestable facts through practical application. As a class we're improving on our word problem decoding abilities overall as well! We are building that confidence and resilience to sit with a problem, make as much sense of it as we can, and then try. That willingness to engage process has resulted in us needing less help from Mr. Josh and Rashawn, because the act of trying has shown us we're more capable than we knew. This week, we also continued our long division practice. it can be a bit tricky to trust the formula, but we are working to remember that formulas are like maps- as long as you follow them, you will get exactly where you're trying to go (long as you're not Columbus, ayyooo!).
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH.
There's no better time than any given moment to celebrate all the great women in the world, and across time!
We introduced Women's History Month and the project we'll be working on. This is going to be a month filled with learning about all sorts of women, and specifically women in leadership roles around the world.
Our big project (more to come later) is the Madam President Project. It's where all of the girls in the class get to be President, and give a short speech on how they will lead.
We believe in education and empowerment in 2nd Grade/at TCS, and we're not pumping the brakes even slightly this month. Great things ahead, as we lead with our catchphrase... Women belong everywhere.
HERO OF THE WEEK: CONGRATS DAISY!
