MUSIC CLASS
WITH TEACHER BRIAN
THIS WEEK, TEACHER BRIAN INTRODUCED THE CHILDREN TO THE MUSIC OF THE COMPOSER, WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART. EACH CHILD CHOSE A BRIGHTLY COLORED SCARF AND MOVED AROUND THE MUSIC ROOM WITH IT, RESPONDING BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND PHYSICALLY TO THE SOFT AND LOUD DYNAMICS OF THE MUSICAL SELECTION.
MATH CENTER
On Monday, Teacher Jan introduced the Yellow Roomers to the mathematical concept of "two halves making a whole" as she read the book, Give Me Half! by Stuart J. Murphy. Throughout the story, two siblings learn to share pizza, juice, and cupcakes, finally getting into a food fight that makes a huge mess on the floor. However, at that point, they realize that splitting the cleanup equally between them would make it not only easier but also faster!
On Tuesday at the Math center, the children had a lot of fun playing a math game in which each received a circular orange piece of construction paper, representing a pizza, and counted the exact number of tiny paper pepperoni slices that showed up when they rolled one die on the table. When all the friends had finished rolling the die, they were asked questions such as "whose pizza had the most slices of pepperoni?" and "how many more slices would you need to add to your pizza to match the number of slices on your friend's pizza?"
🍄MUSHROOM MATH🍄
THE YELLOW ROOMERS COMBINED THEIR FINE MOTOR AND COUNTING SKILLS AS THEY IDENTIFIED THE NUMBER WRITTEN ON THEIR MUSHROOM STALK AND ADDED THE CORRESPONDING NUMBER OF BEANS TO THEIR PLAY-DOUGH MUSHROOM.
FRIENDS ALSO PRACTICED THEIR NUMBER RECOGNITION AS THEY TRACED THE NUMBERS FROM 1-10 AND COMPLETED SEVERAL WORKSHEETS WHICH TESTED THEIR ABILITY TO COUNT OBJECTS AND USE SIMPLE ADDITION.
WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH PROJECTS
This week, friends also learned about Eugenie Clark, who was popularly known as The Shark Lady. She was an American ichthyologist, which is a zoologist specializing in the study of the fish. Eugenie Clark was best known for her research on shark behavior.
We read the book, Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating.
This colorful picture book traced her childhood fascination with the ocean along with the creatures of the sea, especially sharks! Eugenie Clark defied stereotypes to study sharks, proving they were intelligent creatures to be admired, not feared.
On Friday, friends created underwater scenes with a crayon resist water color project. They first drew designs or ocean creatures with a white crayon on their paper and then covered those with shades of green and blue watercolor, revealing those drawings and creating unique ocean backgrounds for a shark that they had painted in grey tempera.
On Thursday, the Yellow Roomers watched a Read Aloud video called A Pocket Full Of Colors: The Magical World of Mary Blair, Disney Artist Extraordinaire by Mary Guglielmo and Jacqueline Tourville. Mary was one of the first female artists employed by Walt Disney, and she worked in a male dominated field where her designs were often criticized by her male coworkers.
However, Walt Disney loved her designs and unique color palette, and he had her create the design for It's A Small World After All and other Disney films. it was said that she collected "colors" from her travels around the world.
LANGUAGE ARTS
This week, the Yellow Roomers celebrated READ ACROSS AMERICA, along with Book Fair Week, by writing individual and group stories.
Friends were inspired by the book What Would You Do In A Book About You? by Jean Reidy, illustrated by Joey Chou.
"This lovely picture book encourages imagination by asking readers what they would do if their life were a book, exploring grand adventures like riding dinosaurs or rescuing royalty, as well as small acts of kindness and bravery, with endless possibilities."
We followed some basic storytelling tips from the game, HOW TO TELL A STORY, by Daniel Nayeri and Brian Won.
Friends learned about the different segments that make up a story: People or Animals, Things, Places, Descriptions or Emotions, Actions, and Relationships.
Using these elements, some children chose to write individual short stories, while others preferred to collaborate with their classmates.
We hope you enjoy reading their stories below. Our next step is to create artwork to accompany these epic tales! Stay tuned....
Teacher Matt stopped by the Yellow Room on Wednesday and shared a mindful moment of meditation and deep belly breathing with the children. It was a calming break from a very busy morning.
MINDFULNESS, MEDITATION AND MOVEMENT
🌟NIGHT OF A 1000 STARS🌟
ON TUESDAY EVENING, FRIENDS AND FAMILIES GATHERED FOR A NIGHT OF COMMUNITY AS THEY ENJOYED A YUMMY DINNER AND READINGS BY TWO OF OUR BELOVED STAFF MEMBERS. COACH JEREMY AND THE BLUE ROOM JUNIORS' TEACHER, KATE. EACH READ AN ORIGINAL STORY THAT THEY WROTE TO A PACKED MUSIC ROOM FULL OF THEIR BIGGEST FANS.
AFTERWARD, FRIENDS PERUSED THE SHELVES AT THE BOOK FAIR IN SEARCH OF THEIR NEXT READ!
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED THIS LOVELY EVENING OF TOGETHERNESS!
ART CLASS
The Yellow Roomers created colorful Spring flowers during Art Class!
BOOK FAIR
ON WEDNESDAY, IT WAS THE YELLOW ROOMERS TURN TO VISIT THE BOOK FAIR! FRIENDS HAD A BLAST SEARCHING THE SHELVES FOR BOOKS FEATURING SOME OF THEIR FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND SUBJECT MATTER! SEVERAL OF THE CHILDREN OPTED FOR JOURNALS TO PRACTICE THEIR DRAWING AND WRITING SKILLS!
SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL OF THE PARENTS THAT STOPPED BY TO ASSIST THEIR KIDS IN MAKING THEIR SELECTIONS AND TO THE VOLUNTEERS WHO HELPED THE YELLOW ROOMERS COMPLETE THEIR PURCHASES!
STORY TIME
Shar Fine, our beloved Preschool Director, stopped by this week to share a cute story entitled, Mr. Fine, Porcupine by Fanny Joly, about a sweet, misunderstood porcupine in search of friendship, but instead was feared by others due to his sharp, pointy quills. Shar quizzed the children on some porcupine facts we learned at The Wildlife Learning Center, including the fact that porcupines only use and show their quills as a form of defense when they are scared.
TEACHER SARAH READ KINGSTON'S NEWLY PURCHASED BOOK, 100 MIGHTY DRAGONS NAMED BROCCOLI, BY DAVID LA ROCHELLE. THE CHILDREN ENJOYED THIS SILLY COUNTING BOOK ABOUT 100 DRAGONS WHO GO ON VARIOUS ADVENTURES, LEAVING ONE BY ONE, OR IN A GROUP, UNTIL EVENTUALLY, THERE IS JUST ONE REMAINING DRAGON! WE WON'T REVEAL THE SURPRISE ENDING BUT IT MADE US ALL LAUGH PRETTY HARD!!!
FRIENDS PRACTICED THEIR ADDING AND SUBTRACTING SKILLS AS EACH PAGE OF THIS FUN BOOK, WHICH PROMOTES EARLY MATH CONCEPTS, WAS READ!
INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LEARNING AND PLAY CENTERS
On the meadow, friends followed along with an action-packed, role-playing game that had them all dancing and hopping. It was easy to see how the childen were feeling because they revealed a range of emotions through their facial expressions.
Friends focused on finding and matching shapes on a Geo board.
Ponies and pipe builders were also pretty popular at other play centers!
P.E. WITH COACH JEREMY
DURING THIS WEEK'S P.E. CLASS, THE CHILDREN, WORKING IN PAIRS, FOCUSED ON HITTING A VARIETY OF BALLS OF DIFFERENT SIZES AND WEIGHTS WITH FOAM BATS. THEY NEEDED TO HIT AN OVERSIZED SOCCER BALL, A BEACHBALL, A TENNIS BALL, AND OTHER TYPES OF BALLS! FRIENDS UTILIZED HAND-EYE COORDINATION AND TEAMWORK WHILE MOVING FROM STATION TO STATION, TESTING THEIR ABILITIES AND CHALLENGING THEMSELVES IN THIS FUN-FILLED ACTIVITY!
