This week we introduced a BIG WORD into our little learner's vocabulary; Nocturnal. Nocturnal refers to things that occur at night. Nocturnal animals are those who are most busy at night and who typically sleep during the day. WE are of course diurnal, because we are awake and busy during the day, and we sleep at night. We talked about some wonderful Nocturnal animals like Bats, Mice, Hedgehogs, Foxes and Owls. These kiddos thought it was just so silly to be up and about at nighttime!
This week we began our preparations for Night School with some neon paint with sponges and plates. "Night School" is next week, Friday, February 6th. We began our first, "Directed Drawing" activity by creating our own Hedgehogs. See if you can guess which one was drawn by your little artist! We talked about mice being nocturnal and did a multi-step project creating rainbow mice, which are now on display, romping over and under dirt mounds and grassy burrows.
Our Nocturnal theme gave us the opportunity to talk about habitats, diets and behaviors. Ms. Kate brought in a wooden treehouse for the students to play with, along with rabbits and mice, who just so happen to be nocturnal. Students are sharing more easily, using their words to solve problems and deepening their imaginative play together! We're constructing, driving, counting, molding, cutting, drawing and painting! And we are doing a better and better job of tidying up and keeping our classroom organized!
These days we're seeing more and more play outside with storylines and characters. We see it becoming more organized at times, which is so fun to watch! On fun Friday, we went out on the meadow for STOMP ROCKETS!
Music has been great this week with Mr. Brian at the helm. He's kind, creative and keeps our kiddo's engaged and moving about!
So many books! So little time :)
