Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We had a deeply focused community building time this week in class. There were many conversations about how tone affects communication, as well as several moments of translation. Sometimes what we are hearing is not a what person is intending to say; sometimes our lens of wanting to help can shade the behavior we receive in response, and make something seem personal that wasn't actually personal. We also revisited what having a neighbor means, be it our classmates, specialty teachers, or even parents! Pressing on through what is uncomfortable is a critical component of any genuine growth, and that is what we did this week as Second Graders.
This week in Language Arts, we continued working with contractions and singular possessives! Contractions have clicked pretty well with the entire class, and we're ready to add even more to our arsenal. Singular possessive (tricky words to remember!) have been a little challenging, because we have to remember to add the apostrophe s. We're slowly getting the hang of it though! We also spent time practicing our storytelling skills. We read the short story "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," and then we had to write a three paragraph sequel to it in our composition notebooks. So much imagination in the classroom, and wow has our penmanship improved by leaps and bounds since the beginning of the year!
This week in Math, we actually hit a brand new class record! We received our math packets on Tuesday, and by Wednesday, EVERYBODY had finished them! Whoa! Our math minds are on fire! In addition (get it??) to borrowing, carrying, and multiplying, we also went to work on understanding the passage of time. If an event starts at 10, and we arrived 2 hours early... what time did we arrive? Those sorts of time centered word problems challenged our logical minds and helped us build stronger connections with how numbers work. We ALSO hit an all new class record, with the whole class solving six (that's right SIX) word problems in a single day! The expectation was that it would take two days to get through them, but that wasn't the case. While we each had a couple which needed to be revisited the following day, the sheer fact of reading, calculating, and working through six word problems in one day is unprecedented in this class. Mr. Josh and Teacher Rashawn were so proud!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
NEIGHBORS
What does it mean to be neighbors during times of conflict? How does a growth mindset show itself when the intention of being neighborly is undercut by behaviors reflective of self centeredness?
The first step is accountability, and through that, accepting self responsibility. It's easy to speed through life, never looking back at the hurt we may have caused someone, but that is not who we are striving to be in second grade.
The second step is preparing for our next encounters with selfishness. To this end, we rewatched the Mr. Rogers video on being a neighbor. He reminded us that loving and respecting our neighbors flows out of us first loving and respecting ourselves.
After a short conversation on practical application of the concept, we each were given two sticky notes. A purple one to write down one way we can show love to ourselves; and a pink one to write down one way we can show love and respect to others. We then stuck these notes all around the classroom as a living reminder of the thoughtful, caring neighbor we deeply strive to be.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARMELLA!
