Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We had an incredible week in so many ways! There was a much greater amount of understanding amongst the class, and more attempts at direct expression/conflict resolution. We were much more open minded not only to our self conduct in light of our own interests, but also in regards to how the way we move impacts those around us (both positively and negatively). As many of you know, we've spent the last two weeks recalibrating so that we can show up as our best selves in our specialty classes. The unexpected, yet totally beautiful, side effect of this process was that recreational reading by the entire class skyrocketed by about 200%. Everyone has been diving into a book any spare moment they had, and then also been eager to talk about what they'd read! It's been wonderful and we're so proud of them.
Special shout out to LaNina for being our library reader this week! As a matter of fact, let's put an extra serving of gratitude on that, because she came in to read for us, despite having a foot injury! She wheeled herself in on that scooter like it was nothing, and read to us with such engaging vigor, you couldn't even tell there was something wrong. You were a delight, and we loved the stories you read to us! We were hooked!
This week in Language Arts, we had a mixed bag of fun! We began our week learning about quotation marks and how to use them! This was especially useful, because so many of us have been including dialogue in our stories, but haven't known how to do so correctly. We learned what quotation marks are, and we practiced writing one paragraph short stories with two characters talking to one another. Second Graders are writers! We then spent a couple days doing the current round of TILE assessments. And to top it off, we closed out the week with the in class spelling bee! We talked about having good sportsmanship during the bee, whether we spelled the words correctly or not... and it was a success! We conducted ourselves very well. We also learned the value in keeping an awareness of our words. They don't know it yet, but... we may be having a few more practice spelling bees in our class before the year is up. 😉
This week in Math, we continued practicing our 8s timestables. As a class, we have collectively gotten much stronger with our 8s, but that's not where the true victory lies. Sometimes we're not sure what the answer is, and it's helped us hone our abilites as problem solvers. If we don't know 9x5, we're reminded that we DO know 5x9 and then it clicks! Or maybe we really can't get it, and we have to use our circle groups to figure out the answer. Either way, we're getting that practice in using our logic brains to keep us moving forward! We also took the time to do our math TILE this week as well. The crown jewel of this week was circling back to fractions and diving all the way in! We learned about halves, thirds, and fourths. We also learned that the dividing line means "out of," and how to identify the fraction of something out of an overall group!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
In Second Grade, we do in depth character studies and portfolio designs to celebrate Black History Month. The whole class is introduced to a number of incredible Black historical figures, both past and contemporary (translated here as "some dead and some living") and then they get to pick who they want to have a deeper study on.
This week, we closed out the last of our character introductions, spanning a wide range of careers and lifestyles. The complete list of people we learned a little bit about are: Simone Biles, Lanny Smoot, Henrietta Lacks, Damon Alums, Nikki High, Dwayne McDuffie, Mellody Hobson, and Octavia E. Butler.
We begin our deeper dives and portfolio creations next week! Woo!
SECOND GRADE HAS AWESOME PARENTS WHO LEAD BY EXAMPLE! WE LOVE ALL OF YOU!
