This week in the Green Room, we spent time talking about Christmas, a beautiful holiday of light that is celebrated in so many special ways. The children loved exploring all the fun parts of the season, like Santa, elves, reindeer, and the sweet traditions that families pass down from generation to generation.
Some of the children shared that they make Christmas letters and send them to Santa. Other children shared with us how they open Christmas presents on Christmas morning and have Christmas Day Dinners with their families.
Teacher Nancy and I were especially excited to share one of our favorite traditions with the children: Nochebuena, which means “Good Night.” On Nochebuena, or Christmas Eve, many families come together for a cozy and joyful night of celebration. We talked about how some of our families make yummy foods like tamales or pozole, and how we gather with our loved ones to share laughter, stories, and love. We even told the children that in some homes, families stay up until midnight to open presents, a detail that absolutely amazed them!
We loved enjoying all the fun topics that this week had to offer. It was so heartwarming to see the children realize that Christmas can look a little different for everyone, and that every family’s traditions make the holiday uniquely special.
Have a restful weekend,
Karla & Nancy
On Monday, we read a sweet story called The Day Santa Got Sick by Deanne Samuels. This heartwarming, multicultural tale taught us all about the power of community! The children followed along as a little elf and Mrs. Claus came up with a clever plan to help deliver Santa’s gifts to children all around the world.
The story sparked wonderful conversations, our little problem solvers quickly started brainstorming their own creative ideas to help Santa! Their excitement was contagious and filled the room with holiday cheer.
Feeling inspired, we made our very own Christmas trees! With fine motor practice, a bit of paint, and a whole lot of imagination, the children created beautiful pieces that made our classroom feel bright, festive, and merry.
This story filled us with so much warmth — another multicultural tale that truly shone bright! Santa’s Secret by Brittney Harris tells the story of a little boy with a big wish to meet Santa. One magical day, he is transported to the North Pole, where he discovers the wonder and spirit of Christmas. The ending was especially heartwarming, as we learn that Carson’s grandpa might just be Santa himself. The children were captivated by this sweet twist! 🎅✨
Inspired by the story, the children insisted that we make a giant community Christmas tree for our classroom. We couldn’t think of a better idea! Each child decorated their own triangle as a collage, and together we assembled them into a beautiful, colorful tree displayed on our classroom window for everyone to enjoy. It was a joyful project that celebrated creativity, teamwork, and holiday cheer. 🌲💚
Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto and Ed Martinez is a lovely story about family traditions. On a special family night, María helps make tamales with her mom, brother, and sister. While kneading the masa dough, she accidentally mixes in her mom’s wedding ring. Once she realizes it might be lost in the dough, she and her siblings start eating their way through way too many tamales, only to discover that her mom had been wearing the ring the whole time!
This beautiful and funny story inspired us to explore tradition through taste! We enjoyed sweet corn tamales as well as chicken and cheese tamales, and the children absolutely loved getting to experience this delicious tradition.
On Thursday, we read Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas by Jane O'Connor. In a world where too much tinsel is never enough, Fancy Nancy discovers that things don’t always go as planned. But with her signature flair and creativity, she finds a wonderful solution to her holiday mishap. Her resilience, and her love for all things fancy showed the children that a little Christmas sparkle can go a long way! ✨🎀
Inspired by Fancy Nancy, the children made their own Splendiferous Christmas Wreaths, each one decorated with so much creativity and festive charm. They turned out absolutely fabulous! 🎄💖
This week with Teacher Lauren, the children were hard at work practicing their song for the Winter Sing! All of our little soloists are doing such a wonderful job, their confidence is really shining through. ❄️
In between rehearsing for the big performance, we made sure to sprinkle in some of the children’s favorite songs, including The Glue Song and The Scarf Song. These are always a huge hit and bring so much joy and energy to the room. It was such a delight to see how much fun they had in music this week! 🌟
This week at centers, the children explored so many exciting activities! Our sensory play included a Christmas-themed sensory bin, kinetic sand, and playdough, which kept little hands busy and curious. ✨
The children also practiced their early math skills through sorting activities and Unifix cubes, helping them build counting, patterning, and problem-solving skills in a fun and hands-on way. It was a wonderful week of learning through play! 🎄🧠
Share Day brought lots of fun and new items! The children were so excited to share all of their toys!

This week we had an exciting development, all of the aluminum cans and plastic bottles you’ve helped the children collect have brought us to $12 this week! Added to our previous $6, we now have a total of $18. That means we’re only $32 away from reaching our goal! 🎉
Please continue bringing in aluminum and plastic bottles so we can reach our goal and support our sweet adopted animal at the Wildlife Learning & Conservation Center. Thank you for your teamwork and for helping the children stay excited and engaged in this meaningful project! 🐾
