Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This week we introduced the Willpower Wrap Ups! These are daily, mini packets where we focus exclusively on reviewing different skills we've learned over the last few months which have remained areas of growth. This allows us to target with precision, without actually increasing our weekly work! Yay! This week we also celebrated the birthdays of Maya and Mia!! Thank you Reyna and Ed for hosting such a fun and exhilarating birthday celebration, and allowing us to be a part of it!
Double shout out to Reyna for being our Libary Reader this week! You were fun, engaging, and super flexible with us! The story you chose was quite inspiring, and we really enjoyed the interactive elements.
This week in Language Arts, we focused on three specific skills; writing in the form of giving directions (Monday), writing in the form of self reflections (Tuesday), and writing in the form of generating a short story (Wednesday). Practicing these three types of writing, allows us to cover the basic foundations of language is generally used, which pull on our brains in slightly different ways. This also became an exercise in time management, because there's always enough time to write... as long as we're actually writing. 🤗 We also introduced editing/revisions this week! Thursday and Friday, we each personally sat with Mr. Josh at the smile table and edited one body of work we had written this week. First, we made a list of words with corrected spelling, then we received notes on punctuation, letter size and structure, and spacing. After that, we went to work on our rewrites! We didn't all complete the new revisions of our work, which is fine because it's the mindset shift of returning to edit what we've already finished which was the goal.
This week in Math, we learned one new skill to help us with our review work and that was 2 by 1 multiplication problems! We spent all of Monday learning and practicing the formula, and then we revisited it the rest of the week. We also focused in on problems requiring carrying and borrowing, making fact families, calculating perimeter and area, and closing out with a bit of fun graphing exercises. In addition to the intention of strengthening these skills unto fluidity, these were all specially selected to allow them the room to develop and even greater skill. Logic. This entire class excels at being given directions; if you tell them what to do with a problem, they will cheerfully do it! However, we want to also help build their confidence in their own problem solving skills! Using this review format, it gives them the platform and space to cultivate being logically minded, confident problem solvers.
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WILLPOWER.
For those who may not know, the Green Lanterns are superheroes who are given a power ring which allows them to create amazing constructs from their imagination... but in order for this ring to work, they must harness their willpower.
This week we talked about what willpower is, by first examining what it can do. From the class, we uncovered that willpower helps us not do something we want to do but know we shouldn't... it helps us persevere when things are difficult... it guides our choices when we're debating across various options.
Willpower is the exercise of intention towards our preferred goals, in spite of any hardship or complications along the way. This was the framework of our week, to help us prepare to use our willpower to review our many skills these closing weeks before break, and emerge as the heroes we truly are.
