THE FOUR PILLARS OF WELL-BEING-
PRACTICING MINDFULNESS, KINDNESS, AND GRATITUDE IN OUR COMMUNITY
On Tuesday, Kingston's mommy, La Nina, joined the Yellow Roomers to share her family's tradition of celebrating Kwanzaa. This holiday is an annual, week-long (December 26th-January 1st) celebration honoring African American heritage, community, and culture as well as a reaffirmation of African roots and identity culminating in a communal feast called Karamu.
The name, Kwanzaa, comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza which means "first fruits" and draws its inspiration from traditional African harvest festivals.
Kwanzaa focuses on seven core principles, the Nguzo Saba, which promote unity and community within the African American population. Each day of Kwanzaa highlights one of the principles listed below:
La Nina read The Night Before Kwanzaa by Natasha Wing and Kirsti Jewel. This book explains the traditions of Kwanzaa through the story of a young boy and his family who are celebrating the holiday (which covers the seven principles known as Nguzo Saba and the lighting of the kinara.)
La Nina brought her daughter's African drum to the class. Kingston drummed along to the song, Kwanzaa Celebration, as the Yellow Roomers danced to its rhythmic beat!
As an art project, the Yellow Roomers used the collage technique to create unique Unity Cups. Each of the children glued a variety of black, yellow, red, and green paper pieces onto a brown construction paper cutout of a Unity Cup.
INDOOR LEARNING AND PLAY CENTERS
ON MONDAY, FRIENDS WERE EXCITED TO RECEIVE A SPECIAL SURPRISE VISIT FROM HADDIE POSTLEWAITE, THEIR FRIEND WHO WAS THEIR CLASSMATE IN THE RED ROOM AND THEN, IN THE GREEN ROOM LAST YEAR.
WE LOVED HAVING HADDIE JOIN US FOR THE FUN AND FESTIVITIES OF THE WEEK!

OUR FRIEND, EZRA JACK, SENT HOLIDAY GREETINGS FROM HIS TRIP TO CABO WHERE HE SWAM WITH A DOLPHIN!
On Monday, the Yellow Roomers celebrated Chanukah with a variety of center activities.
At one center, the Yellow Roomers pressed Chanukah cookie cutters (in the shapes of a menorah, dreidel, wine cup or Star of David) into blue playdough. They also used Chanukah candles and their imagination to mold other playdough creations.
At another center, Mason's mom, Courtney, brought in dreidels and gelt (chocolate coins) and taught the children how to play the festive dreidel game. First a "pot" is formed out of the gelt or chocolate coins. On each of the four sides of a dreidel is a Hebrew letter, either gimmel, nun, hay or shin. Depending on which side (or letter) your dreidel lands on after spinning it, the player has a chance to take all the gelt (gimmel), none of the gelt (nun), half of the gelt (hay) or adds (shin) gelt to the pot! The children all received gelt (and a dreidel if they wished for one) to take home. Thank you, Courtney!
Later, Courtney read Dara Henry's delightful book, Hanukkah Pajamakkahs, to the children.
At yet another center, Teacher Jan, showed the Yellow Roomers how to make a sweet and salty Chanukah treat in the shape of a dreidel. Of course, the best part of this activity was eating their edible dreidel! Teacher Nancy (Green Room) donated her homemade tasty little latkes for all the Yellow Roomers to try. Most of them paired these with either a dollop of sour cream or apple sauce. This was a very yummy holiday center!!
