This week during ELA, we practiced our letters of the week Y and Z. We made it to the end of the alphabet! We also played Kaboom! to practice sight words and wrote in our journals. In Math this week, we started learning about place value. Everyone practiced building teen numbers with ten towers and ones. We did this by playing spin and build, board games, and a marshmallow match-up activity!

This week in science, our students learned all about penguins! They explored where penguins live, Antarctica, and discovered their unique characteristics and behaviors. Students learned that penguins have a black back and white belly, which helps them camouflage in the ocean. We also talked about their diet and learned that penguins love to eat fish.
For our hands-on activity, students created their own penguins! They cut out the face, body, and wings, and used cotton balls to make the penguin’s white belly. They had a great time bringing their penguins to life!
In Social Studies, we learned all about Kwanzaa. We explored the history of the holiday and some of its traditions, such as lighting the kinara. We also noted the similarities and differences of the winter holidays we have experienced this year.
During Challenge Time, we made paper gingerbread houses! It was great to get creative and practice our scissors skills.
Thank you to everyone who came to help us decorate lunch bags today! Our next service learning day will be January 16th!
For those who have not yet done so, please bring in your child’s supplies, emergency kit, and extra clothes.
