Dear Green Room Families,
“Farm life isn’t for everyone, but hay – it’s in my jeans!” – Old McDonald
This week, we began our Open House unit on the farm, learning about a marvelous moo cow. We discovered cows are mammals like us, only with four stomachs and the ability to give us dairy products like milk, butter, and cheese.
Teacher Karla read the Caldecott Honor-winning Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin, about Farmer Brown's cows who find a typewriter and go on strike for electric blankets. A humorous negotiation follows that involves the hens and ducks. The children began to work on a few secret under-construction projects in preparation for our Open House, which is on the evening of May 14. Save the date!
We celebrated Earth Day by reading Todd Parr’s Love The World, a book that promotes self-love, kindness, and environmentalism. The author’s signature bright colors and simple text encourages readers to love themselves, others, and the planet. It covers themes such as helping the Earth (our home), self-esteem, acceptance, and respect, with phrases like "Love your grin," "Love the bees/trees," and "Love giving a hand." We talked about small ways we can help Earth, such as recycling, cleaning the beaches, not littering, turning off the running water, and helping our communities. We followed this by planting our own Earth Day succulents.
In Music class with Teacher Brian, the children warmed up their vocal cords, sang the “Welcome Song,” and jumped right into their rehearsal songs. The children did great and enjoyed a dancing break between rehearsals. They will be singing Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart” and Mary Poppins’ “A Spoon Full of Sugar!” at our Spring Sing Show on May 21 at 5:45 p.m.
Our Library Guest reader this week was Zenni Heard’s mom, Amara. She read some of Zenni’s favorite stories, including Gabby Dawnay’s If I Had an Octopus, which imagines the fun and practical benefits (helping with homework, playing games) of having a smart, eight-armed octopus as a pet. Amara also read Mo Willems’ Should I Share My Ice Cream?, a fun and silly story about friendship and sharing. We thank Amara for taking the time to come read to our class!
For Fun Friday, we had our regularly scheduled Friday 15, in which we took all of our pet drive items going to Operations Blankets of Love, and finished up with Share Day.
We wish you a wonderful weekend.
Kind Regards,
Nancy & Karla 🐑 🐮
