This week in preschool, our mornings didn’t start quite like usual. The children were greeted by bright, beautiful balloons with smiling faces on them. On Monday, we kicked off the week with Music Monday. We moved and grooved to the beat of drums and light percussion instruments with our favorite music teachers, Brian and Kofi. On Tasty Tuesday, we enjoyed a terrific treat as the children sliced and diced fruit on brightly colored cutting boards to create a beautiful friendship salad. When Wednesday came around, everything was a bit out of sorts and super wacky. Everyone’s outfits shined brightly during our runway fashion show! On Thursday, we celebrated Theatrical Thursday by making hand puppets out on the yard. Finally, Friday arrived, and we were all very happy and excited to welcome our wonderful parents for Career Day.
It was such a fun and beautiful week, filled with joy and creativity.
Warmly,
The Green Room Team 💚
Musical Monday was such a fun and engaging day! We started out on the yard with music from around the world, with instruments carefully laid out for the children to explore. We kicked off the week by drumming along with Teacher Kofi and Teacher Brian. The children enjoyed playing drums, tambourines, and maracas, staying on beat while exploring the different sounds each instrument could make.
Later in the day, we dove deeper into music and read Little People, Big Dreams: Dolly Parton by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. We learned about a little girl born to humble beginnings in the state of Tennessee and followed her journey as she became a musician, starting by sharing her songs on the radio. We also talked about her musical records and listened to her famous song “9 to 5.”
During centers, the children had the opportunity to paint their very own recycled vinyl records. Using glitter and acrylic paint, they created beautiful “greatest hits” albums of their own.
Tuesday was tasty and terrific! As the fruit made its way to the yard, our table began to look livelier and brighter. Teacher Karla led the students in a safety tutorial on how to cut fruit using child-safe knives and colorful cutting boards. We started with the song “Peel Banana” as we followed each step together. Then it was time to “chop our bananas!”
Each child had a turn chopping different fruits and adding them to our giant friendship fruit bowl. Once we were finished, we served the fruit into cups, and everyone enjoyed it together during snack time.
In the classroom, we enjoyed a few movement activities, including a fun game of hot potato. We also listened to “Fruit Salad” by The Wiggles and grooved together.
During centers, the children worked on a fine motor activity, practicing their cutting and gluing skills as they created their own paper salads using lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots. Thank you parents for all of your fruit contributions!
On Wednesday, Teacher Nancy and Karla were feeling especially wacky! Teacher Nancy wore a side ponytail and all black, which was quite the opposite of her usual colorful attire. Teacher Karla showed up in a bright, colorful outfit paired with a rainbow feathered boa and even some Shrek ears! We embraced all the silliness and kicked off the morning with a wacky fashion show on the play yard.
In the classroom, Teacher Nancy read Wacky Wednesday by Dr. Seuss. The story was all about waking up to a day full of wacky things, a shoe on the wall, a palm tree in the toilet, and even a teacher on roller skates! After finishing the book, the children began to notice some very wacky things in our own classroom. They spotted a shoe on the wall, upside-down baby dolls, a diaper on the board, and even a baby rocking in the treetop!
During centers, the children created their own Wacky Wednesday collages, using their imaginations to design silly and unexpected scenes.
On Thursday, we enjoyed a day full of theatrics and costumes! Our morning began on the yard with an activity led by our very own Teacher Nancy. The children made paper bag puppets and even put on their own puppet shows.
During centers, the children dressed up in a variety of costumes—some even came to school already dressed for the occasion! While some children created their own theater plays using hand puppets, others put on singing performances in front of our very own red curtain and stage lights.
We were so grateful to welcome several wonderful parents who came to share their careers with our preschool community!
Zoe Boom, Emily's mom visited and introduced our Green Roomers to her role as a PA. She showed the children her stethoscope and explained how she uses it to check her patients’ heartbeats. Each child even had a chance to listen to her heart! She also shared the book My Mom the PA by Julia Tangamyan alongside Emily.
From the Blue Room, Willie Larson, Della’s mom, shared her important work as a nurse and midwife/doula. She explained how she supports mothers and their babies. She brought her stethoscope, along with small baby toys for the children to take home. One of the highlights was a unique clear model showing how a baby grows inside a mother’s body. The children were fascinated as they watched how the baby moved within the model.
Yellow Room parent Jared Marantz visited to share his profession as an illustrator. He showed the children some of his favorite work, including illustrations of Batman, Spider-Man, and other superheroes. He also brought a 3D-printed model of one of his drawings, demonstrating how his artwork can come to life.
Blue Room parent Max Rand, Penelope’s dad, told us all about owning his coffee shop, Good Friend, where he makes coffee for hundreds of people each day. He brought coffee beans for the children to smell and touch, filling the room with a wonderful aroma. The children then brought out their inner baristas by creating their own coffee cups with “Good Friend” stickers and celebrating together!
Lastly, Red Room parent Shane Abrahams, Otis’s dad, shared his career as a songwriter, producer, and composer. He showed the children a music video from Pixar’s first series Win or Lose, where he composed and wrote the song “Paradise.” He also taught the children about songwriting, and before we knew it, we were all creating a fun song about dinosaurs walking out of the Green Room door!
This week was truly filled with community, learning, and celebration for all of our Country School preschoolers. We cant wait to see what the future holds for them when they grow up and assume professions of their own. All of our preschool parents are an inspiration! Thank you to all of our parents for sharing your time and talents with us, we are so grateful for all that you do!
