Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This end of the year train has turned into a rocket ship, and we're moving at top speed! Poems, division, movie making, social studies project, upcoming field trip, oh myyyyyy. 2nd Grade is OUT HERE! Doing big things! Super shoutout to Stoklee, Roman, Mia, and Easton for crushing their poetry performance today!! They have grown so much in their stage ability, and have been working to keep the tips from Mr. Damon Alums in mind. We are so proud of them. Happy National Poetry Month indeed!
We also had a surprise visit from Ms. Hayley!!!! For those who don't know, before there was Rashawn, there was Ms. Hayley. Hayley originally worked in after care, then moved to the 2nd Grade classroom as a brilliant TA. In her last year at TCS, she ended up sharing her time as a TA between first and second grade. Which means her then first graders are now second graders! It was lovely to see her!
Thank you Lauren for being our Library Reader this week! Your book choices were moving and inspirational! We can always use reminders to be kind, and to never let anybody box our lives in! You brough the exact energy we needed in this season. Thank you!
This week in Language Arts, we continued with our TILE assessments. We worked on SRAs (the short stories with comprehension check prompts at the end). We also finished writing our Ekphrasis poems, which were a great exercise in using descriptive language in our writing! Many of us went through the process of revisions multiple time this week as we worked on these poems. While we as a class excel in self expression, our collective growth area has been focusing that self expression through various lenses. Much like Cyclops from the X-Men and his optic blasts. Those blasts are pure, raw power and that is IMMENSELY cool and impressive. However... that sort of unrestrained power is only good for blunt force work. When he wears his specialized shades, they allow him to be Denzel level surgical with his power. This is what we've been developing in 2nd Grade. Tools which transform our explosive natural power of self expression into something precise, versatile, and intentional... yet still powerful.
This week in Math, we contined our practice of singing through all of our timestables songs at least twice, each day this week. We've been working on our multiplication facts, trying to increase the fluency of recall a little bit more each week. We practiced our 2 by 2 multiplication problems, and ALL of us were able to complete the majority of them on our own! That's such a win, and sets us up nicely for third grade! Likewise with division, we are understanding the formula better and better, and seeing the safety and power in sticking to the steps. We revisited our borrowing and carrying, with extremely significant increase in accuracy consistency. We're currently practicing rounding to the nearest hundred, and counting the passage of time on clocks. What's been the most thrilling element to witness is seeing the kids' own excitement as they complete the math packet/parts of the math packet in ways they never have before! They are recognizing their own evolution and it's exciting them. The dream! This is what it's all about!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
THE SLIP.
He's there. Here. Behind you. Just ahead of you. Off to the side... Lurking. Trebling the murky shadows with his barely contained, feverish drive to feed. Like air. Or a vaccum. Eyes ever unblinking, he knows the best way to acquire his unsuspecting prey is to wait. Though he yearns to stretch wide his maw, to permit the chasm of hellish delight to roar out of his depths and into the naiveté of daylight like fanged biker gangs from the dark side of the moon... he knows it will ultimately cost him his quarry. And so he bides his time, midnight nails fracking deep into his palms, until his toxic life ink is forced out like deposed royalty. A crucifixion of his own design, in service of a craftily orchestrated resurrection. This hateful creature is awaiting one, single word, that his dark work may begin.
Summer.
"The Slip" is how Mr. Josh refers to the lapse in learned knowlege which tends to occur over the longer break periods in school. This week, the kids were introduced to the concept of The Slip as well. This was done to create even deeper community between students and teachers, by uniting against a common enemy. The Slip. We've worked hard all year long, and will continue that same standard, but directed towards a different goal. We are trying to minimize what we lose over the summer. So, while it would be easy to kind of slack a bit and get extra silly as the last day of school approaches... that's exactly what The Slip wants. So, though we may not be able to keep EVERYTHING over the summer (that's a long time afterall), through sustaining our work ethic, we can ensure that whatever The Slip manages to steal is relatively insignificant. He can try his best, but he won't be beating us 2nd Graders!
