Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We've had quite the thrilling and excitable week! We kicked off TILE testing, dove deep into math, began filming our movie, and overall leapt full body into the end of the year schedule! The last two months of the school year are unique, because they resemble the work flow of the begining of the year, but contain none of the rhythm. If the opening few months were dance practice, these closing months are the recital going on tour. We are "booked and busy," so to speak, and building on every academic and social-emotional skill we've developed over the last school year. This process does not come without its flaws and occasional missteps. We had one Art class this week where we absolutely did not show up as the 2nd Grade we have consistently been. We reconvened, discussed, wrote apology letters to the stand in art teacher for our grievous misconduct... and then came back the next day (Friday) and SMASHED our self regulation in Art class!! 10/10!! THAT'S HOW 2ND GRADE MOVES!!
Also, thank you Jasmine for being our Library Reader this week! You read with energy, and picked a book filled with easily visualized imagery beyond what the illustrations provided. We thoroughly enjoyed having you!
This week in Language Arts, we re-engaged our work with nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We wrote complex sentences using our spelling words. We also continued working on Ekphrasis Poetry. This week, we used a contemporary, pop culture image to draw inspiration from- a still from the Academy Award Wininng film "Into the Spiderverse." The challenge here was strategically placed, considering most of the class has actually seen the film. Can you write about the image's impact on you in this moment, without slipping into talking about the scene you already have memorized? It's a simple exercise, but a layered one, requiring a deeper level of self awareness and focus. Proud to say that 2nd Grade handled this challenge very well!
This week in Math, we contined our practice of singing through all of our timestables songs at least twice each day this week. We fully integrated back into practicing our borrowing, and carrying, and calculating time. These are fully acquired skills which can slip in execution from time to time, but the way we were able to tackle these math problems was awesome to see! We also revisited rounding (to the tens AND hundreds place!), and we all found our way! Mr. Josh also broke down the formulas for multi digit multiplication and long division into fun, itemized themes to help us remember the steps! Multiplication is the actors on stage thanking the fans in the audience, and division is patrons each trying to acquire equal portions of pastry from a bakery. This format helped a number of us greatly with understanding what was being asked of us, and how to mentally lodge the necessary steps.
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATION.
Behold, our final Social Studies project is upon us!
We used the framework of the viral, and incredibly heart warming story of "Batkid" to set the tone for what grassroots organization is and why it matters. By default, [financially] average people are not at the top of the world in terms of influence and power. Yet, there are vital things which still need to get done.
How does this happen??
Through grassroots organization. Through the power of volunteers. Both of which were beautifully, and inspirationally displayed in the trailer for "Batkid Begins." We talked about Make-A-Wish. We discussed what we thought would compel total strangers to spend time and money to be a part of this moment. The whole class identified that some form of "working together" is required for regular people to make big change.
We are primed and ready to develop our own grassroots organization campaigns as we learn more about the heart of this work via "Batkid Begins."
