We had another productive and creative week in third grade! In ELA, we continued our work with the Five Tool Player and read Ways to Make Sunshine, focusing our discussions on chapters 3 and 4. Students enjoyed fun spelling activities for extra practice and began a winter craft by creating snow people to pair with their “If I Were a Snowman” poems.
In Math, we continued our addition and subtraction board games and practiced word problem strategies during centers. Students followed a structured problem-solving process by first understanding the information, making a plan, and executing that plan.
In Social Studies, students created artistic self-portraits connected to our Five Tool Player work, highlighting their favorite qualities about themselves. In Science, we were introduced to our Mysterious Fruit lesson and discussed plant traits. Students examined traits as evidence to help identify an unknown fruit. Beginning Monday, students will observe similarities and differences in the leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants commonly found at the grocery store to sort them into groups and identify patterns of inheritance.
ELA
This week in ELA, we continued working on our Holes essays, focusing on organizing strong ideas and using details from the book and movie. Students practiced answering reading comprehension questions using the R.A.C.E. method to improve understanding. We also played a fun spelling game that challenged students to quickly find letters and use them to spell words.
Math
In Math, we began our Donut Shop multiplication project, learning to solve 2-by-2 multiplication problems using both the traditional method and the box method. Students compared the strategies to see which worked best for them and practiced solving larger problems to build confidence.
This week, as the Combo Crew studied the community pillar, we explored the meaning of empathy and understanding, learning how to recognize others’ feelings, listen with care, and show kindness through our words and actions.
WEEKLY LEARNING SNAPSHOT
While TCS doesn't assign homework, many parents have requested at-home resources to support skill-building. We're happy to provide materials to help your child practice!
