We had a wonderful week in the Blue Room getting ready for Open House!
The children finished their projects, and we were able to put everything up,
out and on display in time for our big reveal.
If your child came home saying that they went to a petting zoo or had ice cream from an ice cream truck, it really happened and was not just in their adorable imaginations. Last spring at our fundraising event at the iconic Whiskey a Go Go on the Sunset Strip, we had not one, but two lucky winners of a chance to be our Head of School for the day. On the first day, the children ate sherbet from the “Happy Ice” truck compliments of our friend and Head of School Beau, who has been with us since preschool.
On another day, our friend Penelope, also a former preschool attendee, decreed that all children should have the opportunity to visit an ice cream truck after spending some time at a petting zoo. Some of the children were a little reserved at first when it came to petting the animals, but the sweet animals soon won them over. After thoroughly washing our hands, we were given some flavor options for a scoop of delicious ice cream.
The children’s big night was finally here! Family and friends gathered for an evening of learning about our month-long theme of “In the Garden”. We learned about some friendly garden insects, bees and ladybugs. There were ladybugs and a beehive that the children made on display, and our caterpillars began to emerge from their chrysalises. We also learned about seeds, and we even grew our own pots of grass from seed. We will cut the grass next week with some scissors. Next we learned about sunflowers because their seeds are highly visible, and all kinds of animals love eating them, including humans!
We learned about some backyard birds, and we painted little birdhouses and watercolor birds. Our 'growing’ paper sprouts were up on the windows, and so was our display of the life cycle of a butterfly. The books that the children wrote and illustrated were out on a table for all of their families to see. The class even illustrated their made-up Silly Seeds, and these were on display as well.
Our community came together to welcome grandparents and special friends. Our guests were first treated to a continental breakfast and reception on the meadow, after which they came into the classrooms to play with the children and to see their work which was on display.
Grandparents were shared between the children so that everyone had an opportunity to interact and play with them. It was such a magical morning getting to know the grandparents, uncles, and special friends of each child. We loved seeing the special bonds that all of our visitors had with the children, and the new bonds that they formed with their special child's classmates.
Next week, we will be releasing our Painted Lady butterflies, so they can fly away, sip nectar, and be free.
Looking forward to more fun and learning,
Renée & Kate
