Quote of the Week, "Well, I know everything."
-Teddy
This week we talked about those special animals who live in places where it has wintery weather and gets very cold. We made a list, which included:
Polar Bears
Penguins
Garter Snakes
Snow Monsters (hee hee)
Woodchucks
Foxes
Snowy Owls
Ladybugs
Skunks
Snails
It was a short list at the start of the week, but by Friday, we sure did know a lot of animals who live in the cold.
We began the week with some process art around our theme of Winter. Process art emphasizes the DOING of the activity, not the product, allowing kids to interact with materials freely with no right or wrong way to create! Then, after talking about what it means to, "hibernate," we moved into making some of animals that do hibernate and we learned a new word, "Hibernaculum," which means a cave where animals all hibernate together. We made Snowmen, women, sisters and brothers and ended the week learning about and making Penguins!
Our centers were bustling this week with lots of small block-building, play-doh, measuring blocks, magnets, floating ice and polar bears, puppets, and hibernation caves!
Pure joy; that's what this week has been outdoors. The weather has been warm and we have been enjoying our outside time on the play yard and meadow.
This week we welcomed Mr. Brian Heveron-Smith as a sub for Ms. Lauren. Brian is a seasoned educator and he got us moving and grooving! The kids really seemed to take to him quickly :)
Here are some of the themed books we read this week!
What a wonderful celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Thank you parents for your generous contributions of delicious food. What a spread! Remembering MLK gives us the opportunity to talk about what it means to be brave and kind to everyone around us. During circle time, each student shared one thing they were brave about or one act of kindness they made toward someone else. These narratives were transferred onto large "posters" , accompanied by student drawings and carried during our morning march.
Thanks for reading. Have a relaxing and wonderful LONG weekend! We will see you on TUESDAY!
