There was excitement in the air this week as we continued to learn about nocturnal animals. We read the classic tale Owl Babies, and then we painted mother owls which would glow under black light. Next, we feathered little owlets, and recreated part of the book in which the babies wait on a branch for their mother to return. And what do owls eat? They eat other nocturnal animals like mice, voles and frogs. We made some paper plate mice, which were running around on the forest floor.
Next we learned about frogs, and created some with springy legs for hopping. We even had frog races as the children flipped little frogs to their pond destination. Frogs eat insects, including snails, worms, moths, spiders and crickets.
We learned about foxes, and created some using familiar shapes. Foxes are omnivores who eat mice, birds, voles, rabbits, fish, frogs and lemmings. They will also eat eggs, berries, caterpillars, seeds and mushrooms!
The children had so much fun running around the preschool yard and shining their flashlights on the pictures of nocturnal animals.
Next we had a pizza dinner in our classroom, which had warm lighting and a cozy atmosphere.
Everyone explored the room, which included a bat cave, glow writing, glow beading and glittery playdough.
Next we became a little nocturnal ourselves as we ran and played on the meadow. The light-up beach balls were a big hit, as were the glow necklaces. Trying to capture photos of active children in the dark was not easy, but we did our best.
We ended the evening by winding down with a story time and some quiet indoor play. Night School was a huge success, and we can't wait until it comes again next year!
Looking forward to Valentine's Day,
Renée & Kate
