"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think."
-Margaret Mead
This was such a sweet week talking about some of our favorite insects: ladybugs and butterflies as part of our overarching theme of, "The Garden". We took a trip to the TCS garden where Kofi and his class invited us to plant with them!
The blue room used lots of different materials with watercolors, paint, tissue paper and more! In learning about the life cycles of both the ladybug and the butterfly, we were able to put that learning into artistic practice!
From games to science, from embodying cocoons to painting them, we were learning about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. We got messy. We got silly. We built machines and monster trucks and swam dinosaurs through, "sheeted" oceans.
The weather has been lovely, as spring has brought some showers and some cooler temperatures to enjoy the outdoors. Play is becoming more orchestrated and organized, with games that have structure and rules. This is all part of natural development and they're having a wonderful time!
This week Mr. Brian played the piano so we could practice moving our bodies to different tempos and we practiced our songs for Spring Sing.
Books we read this week!
Teaching young learners to be mindful of their current emotional state helps them learn that all feelings are OK. Through this awareness children learn to articulate their own emotions and begin to be aware of their friends feelings too. Our classroom is a safe space to feel all feelings and share those things that make us feel good about ourselves.
