This week in the Blue Room we talked about our amazing bodies. They can do so many wonderful things! In addition to eating, sleeping, and eliminating, we focused on all the ways our bodies can move. We all went out to the Meadow where we ran, rolled and jumped.
Inside the classroom, we acted out Hap Palmer's song "Sammy," in which a little boy pretends to fly, crawl, hop or swim to the store. We also danced to Hap Palmer's song "Shake Something," which focuses on the ways that we can bend, move side-to-side or up and down.
On the preschool yard, we climbed, hung from the parallel bars or navigated the corkscrew slide. We were able to pedal trikes, pull wagons and kick or throw balls. One of our favorite yard activities is playing Chase and running away from Baby Bear (the teacher), who just wants a bear hug!
We played the circus game when indoors again, where each performer did a trick in our circus ring. The body books that we read all talked about how important it is for us to move and to get exercise.
For Hispanic Heritage Month, we decorated paper sugar skulls, which we will put up in the outside showcase. We read an ABC book featuring Mexican folk art animals.
This week we focused on the Mindfulness of Touch. We used Hap Palmer's song "Touch" to connect our sense of touch to our bodies. We learned to "touch our ankle to our wrist" or to "touch our knees with our elbows."
We used our feely box to recognize objects by touch without seeing them. First we showed all of the children objects that were soft or hard, smooth or rough, bumpy or prickly, etc. Next the children were able to touch and feel the objects. Then we covered the objects with a cloth and hid one object in the box for each child. When it was their turn, a child would put their hand in the box and try to guess what the object was using only their sense of touch. The children practiced being mindful of what they touched by focusing on what the object felt like. Then they guessed what it was with a huge degree of success!
Next week, we will be learning about our skeletons. We will explain to the children that our bodies have bones inside that help us to stand and move. We're looking forward to the fun!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Renée & Luz
