This week in the Blue Room we learned about Dia de los Muertos. We made a classroom altar where the children could touch everything as they explored books, "sugar" skulls, marigolds and pumpkin offerings. Next, we used watercolors to paint our very own sugar skull window decorations.
We started talking about Halloween this week. It was so much fun dressing up in costumes and pretending to go Trick-or-Treating!
Teacher Kate helped the children to make magical potions. They fizzed and bubbled over, much to the delight and amazement of the young scientists who conjured them up. Before each child mixed their magic brew, they explained what their potion would do:
Biba — Turn me into a crab.
Brady — Turn me into a tiger.
Cleo — Turn me into a unicorn.
Declan — Turn me into a tomato.
Della — Turn me into a unicorn, too.
Luke — Turn me into a cheetah.
Navy — Make me run fast.
Penelope — Turn me into a cheetah.
Violet — Make me go faster on my scooter.
Luckily no one actually drank their potion, so all of the children returned safely home in their human form.
We kept active this week, running on the meadow, playing on the yard and doing movement activities with teacher Lauren. We read some fun books about ghosts, and then we practiced our writing/drawing skills by imagining what they would look like as we made ghostly decorations for Halloween.
We have been exploring different things that the children may see decorating homes for Halloween. This week we learned about amazing spiders. Spiders come in so many colors and sizes. Some spin webs and some hunt from hidden trapdoors or even by jumping onto their prey. They all have one thing in common though, they have eight legs and most have eight eyes. Our spiders came in different colors, and we strengthened our fine motor skills by attaching their legs and eyes. Then we all worked together to problem-solve the best way to "spin" a giant web for our spiders to play on!
We had so many Halloween books to read this week that the children made looking at them a fun activity. Sometimes they read independently and other times they enjoyed sharing a book with a friend. It's never too early to cultivate a love of reading!
The children are also beginning to engage in large group games and cooperative play. Their tricycle train was a highlight of this as they tried to stay together while traveling around the bike path.
We're looking forward to more Halloween fun and learning next week, as we get ready for the festivities on Friday!
Happy haunting,
Renée & Kate
