This week in the Blue Room, we had many discussions on what it means to be thankful for the people we love, or the things we enjoy. First we made a group gratitude tree on the board, then each child made a smaller gratitude tree which they could take home and use as a placemat.
The weather is cooler and there are leaves falling outside, so we made beautiful collages on our leaf shaped paper to decorate the classroom. We visited the library, where teacher Kate had each child contribute to a group story, which we then read aloud. You can read it below:
Once upon a time there was a cupcake and someone was trying to eat him but no one can see him because he’s really magic (Penelope). Next, nobody can’t see the banana because the banana didn’t want to be eaten (Declan). All of a sudden a monster came and he ate the dinosaur (Luke). So the monster ate a dinosaur and a kid (Biba). So then they called the police (Brady). Then Spider-Man came and made webs (Navy). Then a horsey came to save them (Cleo). And then there was a little ghost who came and said, “Happy Mrs. Chicken Christmas" (Della). THE END!
It was a great week for science, as the children conducted sink and float experiments with leaves, crayons, Duplo bricks, and other items. Predicting outcomes helps children to use prior knowledge as to what items they think will sink or float. The experiment phase gives the children the opportunity to test their ideas.
It was such a happy and busy week! In between rainy days, we took full advantage of our outdoor time. From chasing bubbles on the meadow, to jumping and balancing on a mini obstacle course, we made sure to get plenty of exercise. When it did rain, we had lots of movement activities inside the classroom. In music class, we had fun following directions with some bean bags, which we placed on our heads, elbows, or other body parts such as our knees or shoulders.
To honor Native American Heritage Month, we highlighted some of the indigenous people of Alaska. We read, Mama Do You Love Me? by Barbara Joosse, a story of unconditional love. In the beautifully illustrated book of an Inuit mother and child, the daughter wants to know if her mother will love her forever, even if she gets into mischief or doesn’t listen to her mama. There were many new words in this book, such as umiak, ermine, mukluks, and ptarmigan. It is always special to introduce children to cultures that may be different from their own, and show them the many similarities and things that we have in common.
It was so much fun celebrating your birthday with you!
Have a wonderful fall break, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
