Hello Red Room Families,
This week in the Red Room, we continued getting ready for Night School! The children were so excited for the big day.!
We learned some fun facts about fireflies. Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are actually beetles! They use special organs in their bellies to create “cold light,” which helps them find mates and warn predators. Fireflies live on most continents, especially in warm, humid areas, and they can even glow as eggs or larvae. These fascinating insects include over 2,000 different species! Baby fireflies glow too—these are often called glowworms. Their larvae also emit light to warn predators that they don’t taste very good. We read a book called Fly,Firefly! by Shana Keller and a book called I See Fireflies by Genevieve Nilsen.
We also learned about hedgehogs! Hedgehogs are super-cute, spiky, nocturnal mammals that love to explore. They sleep during the day, often hiding in bushes, and wake up at night to hunt for snacks. With 5,000–7,000 sharp quills for protection, hedgehogs curl into a tight ball when they feel scared, turning themselves into a safe, prickly little fort. We read two cute books about hedgehogs: Hedgehogs by Mary Quattlebaum and Animal Safari: Hedgehogs by Kari Schuetz.
For art this week, the children painted their artwork using bright, fluorescent colors! They had so much fun creating cheerful, colorful masterpieces.
We made fireflies using white cardstock for the bodies and black construction paper cutouts for the heads and wings. The children loved putting all the pieces together.
For our hedgehogs, we used yellow construction paper for the bodies and added bright, colorful paper to represent their spiky quills. We finished them off with big googly eyes, which made each hedgehog extra cute and full of personality!
Then it was time for Night School! The children were amazed as they saw all of their beautiful creations glowing under the black lights. We drew pictures with highlighters and explored different objects shining brightly on top of our light table. The children even got to play with glow-in-the-dark Play-Doh and a super fun glow-in-the-dark sensory bin filled with planets and shooting stars! We enjoyed dinner together at school!
We took a little trip to the library, where Teacher Breanna read a book to us. Afterward, the children enjoyed looking at a few books of their choice.
During our first outdoor playtime on the preschool yard, we had fun searching for different nocturnal animals, running around, and going down the slides. To end the night, the children had a blast playing on the meadow under the night sky with their friends. They tossed light-up balls and ran around with their flashlights. It was a magical evening filled with glowing fun and happy memories!
This week in music class, Teacher Brian had everyone moving and grooving! The children sang a fun song called “Clap Your Hands With Me,” which felt just like a game of Simon Says. They rowed their colorful scarves like rowboats and played “Time to Pass the Beanbag,” practicing sharing by passing the beanbag from friend to friend.
The kids loved using the Boomwhacker tubes—especially when they got to tap them on the floor to make music! To wrap things up, they played Follow the Leader, where one friend showed off a silly dance move and everyone else copied along. All of this was done to the upbeat song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, filling the room with smiles and laughter.
