Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We had a wonderful week which largely consisted of preparing for the Winter Sing! We went over our songs many times in the classroom, and received a plethora of performance tips from Mr. Josh and Rashawn! We did vocal warm ups, learned how to two-step, talked about performance etiquette, and learned how to receive constructive notes on how to improve our performance! We also completed the second TILE assessments this week, which went very smoothly.
Sasha, thank you for bringing the Hanukkah joy to our classroom! You struck the exquisite balance between informative and entertaining, and it really resonated with us all. We especially appreciated you breaking down the truly inspirational significance of Hanukkah, which applies to everyone. Traditions are oft contemporarily presented as indulgences we can do without, and you were a stark reminder that many aged traditions contain soul shaping light at their core. And soul light has no religious or cultural designation; soul light is the most human element there is. Thank you.
Sending so much love to our Room Parents for organizing such a fabulous Holiday Party!! We had a blast all around from Chitra's dazzling hot chocolate (amen for crockpots!), to bingo, to all of the delightful snacks and decorations! It was a wildly fun time.
Shout out to Trinidad for being our Library Reader this week! You closed out our year in truly delightful fashion with your book choices and reading performance! The energy was high, magnetic, and deeply memorable.
This week in Language Arts, we had a relaxed week as we prepared for Winter Sing! We worked through a number of word searches, which was quite the accomplishment for us. Our usual word search warm ups are smaller, but this week we had much larger word searches and it didn't phase us at all! One day, our word was entirely in Spanish, and none of us flinched! 2nd Grade Super Stars indeed! We also completed our Language Arts TILE assessment this week, and demonstrated considerable growth in our ability to self regulate while we worked in small groups until it was our turn for TILE.
This week in Math, we wrapped up our TILE assessments. It went very well, and we were all able to lock in and do what needed to be done. As Winter Sing occupied most of our time this week, we remained flexible as needed to accommodate the practices even when they migrated into part of our Math module. We also creatively engaged our Math minds this week with sudoku puzzles, addition number searches (10 in the middle and we had to circle the numbers around it which added up to 10), and multiplication mazes!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WE ARE PROFESSIONALS
As we prepared for our Winter Sing performance, we learned so much! The key focus Rashawn taught us was that the show must go on. The music drops out? Show goes on. People start singing along with us? Show goes on. We have big emotions? The show goes on. This was something we really internalized, and then utilized during all of our rehearsals, and it showed when it came time for the big performance!
Mr. Josh helped us to focus on the importance of being professional. Keeping straight lines when we're waiting, not being disruptive to other acts, and stage etiquette. The playful analogy we discussed was that giving a great performance, but not being professional, is a lot like baking an amazing cake... and then drizzling a little poop on top of it! Don't poop on my cake! 😂 This was a big, hilarious hit in the classroom, and they all understood what was being communicated. Again, this showed by their stellar performances on stage! We're so proud of them!
