Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This week we continued our Willpower Wrap Ups! We had so much more confidence this time around, and it showed up in our performance! Winter Sing is next week, so we've also been spending some dedicated time making sure we know our songs! Rashawn has been guiding us in our rehearsals, and also giving us all sorts of fun warm up exercises to open our voices to their highest potential! Last Saturday was also Rashawn's birthday, woo! We surprise celebrated her on Monday with singing, flowers, and popsicles! Happiest of years upon you Rashawn; you are deeply beloved by the 2nd Grade!
Shout out to Chitra for being our Library Reader this week! What an absolutely delightful treat to experience a custom made book about your family! Every page was full of fun, surprise, humor, and memorable inspiration. We all very much enjoyed it.
This week in Language Arts, we continued our review of our three core skills; writing in the form of giving directions (Monday), writing in the form of self reflections (Tuesday), and writing in the form of generating a short story (Wednesday). Our writing this week was so much more focused and fluid! We experienced considerable improvement in our ability to give structured directions, identify our thoughts/emotions, and create exciting stories! We also discussed First Drafts and Final Drafts this week! Anytime we write something, that's our First Draft! And the magic of writing and revision is that we don't know when our Final Draft will be; maybe the second draft, maybe the third, maybe the tenth! In 2nd Grade, we're only going to second draft, but we identified that there are other projects (including ones that some of us are doing independently at home!) which might need a few drafts of tinkering before it reaches what we feel is our best. Our minds are expanding!
This week in Math, we learned one last new skill for the year, and that was rounding! Knowledge of place value has continued to be a handy skill for us, and our developing logic skills also served us for rounding. Our Math focused Willpower Wrap Ups continued as well, as we kept up practicing multiplication (some of us can even do 2 by 2 digit multiplication now!), borrowing across zeroes, breaking down word problems into our 3 steps, and calculating area/perimeter. A popular catchphrase in the 2nd Grade this year is "use your resources." Sometimes we have questions, and if we just take a moment to consider solutions, they are often around us already! From checking the board, to asking a neighbor a quick question, to utilizing scratch paper to help us calculate more clearly, Math has been a time where we practice the spectrum of problem solving skills. We are also finding that reading directions is actually a great resource we have as well and very helpful in curing confusion. 🤓
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
THE GREATEST SHOW-EAGLE
We have a show coming, everybody! All week long, we've been practicing everything from lyrics, to how we stand on stage, to learning choreography (we may have had an impromptu dance party or two)! We also had conversation about stage fright, which included strategies on how to use it/overcome it when we're in front of people.
Rashawn has brought her wealth of performance knowledge to our process, and has been showing us how to be our best. We practice, practice, practice, so that we can smoothly navigate any hiccups on game day. For no matter what... The show must go on! 😁
HAPPY BIRTHDAY RASHAWN!
