Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This week we had very somber conversations in class, as we discussed the Super Dream of the 2nd Grade Class- taking care of each other. We discussed that it was very important for 2nd Grade to look out for each other. We then went through what that looks like in various scenarios, and how it's two fold- taking care of your 2nd Grade neighbor means stepping up to help/assist AND allowing yourself to be helped/assisted if you're the one out of order. However, it doesn't stop there. As Mr. Rogers told us, our neighbor is whomever we happen to be around at any given time! Classmates, friends, teachers, parents, nannies, etc. These are ALL our neighbors at different times, and we must mindful of taking care of them.
Our priority must not be selfish come-uppance at all costs, but rather the wellbeing of our neighbor, wherein our own greatest self ascension is realized through the effort itself of offering love with sincerity.
Super Dream: The vision for your future self which informs your present day decisions.
This week in Language Arts, we moved forward with our work in storytelling! All of us are pretty talented at remembering the tales which excite us, and we are learning how to transfer that onto the page! Identifying the main idea (what the story is mostly about) takes a more developed sense of memoery retention. We're practicing following the clues of a story to clearly know what the main idea is. After that, the question is- "How do you know that's the main idea?" That's where our supporting details come into play. Stories tend to have many details, but we've got to keep an eye out for the ones which support our main idea! It's a bit slower of a process than we'd prefer (for now), but we're working our way through it!
This week in Math, we continued practicing our 0-6 times tables! We also spent some time practicing our addition/subtraction fact families. The more fluidly we get those down, the more consistently we'll be able to wean ourselves from finger counting. We also paired perimeter and area this week! This was another space where we had to slow ourselves down, because these required going through steps! We had to ascertain whether or not we were doing perimeter first, or area, and then choose the set of steps which accompany those equation requirements. Also, on Monday, Mr. Josh opened up a discussion with the class, going around asking what we felt had been confusing in math, and what we needed more assistance with. Then he sat with us in groups to directly address our specific needs! How cool!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WALK FOR RUBY BRIDGES!
We've had so many discussions about Ruby Bridges, and we felt so equipped to honor her on her special day! We put a lot of work into our posters, and making sure we chose designs which were appropriate to paying her all due respects!
Unfortunately, the weather had other plans for us! (although some of us would have been down for a rain walk, since Ruby Bridges had to endure that and worse after all at only 6!) But we were not deterred! We watched a short video from Ruby Bridges, and then Teacher Rashawn read us a letter that Ruby Bridges had written for us!
After that, we had a Ruby Bridges Catwalk! We strutted our stuff, posed posed, shared a detail about our poster deisgn, then strutted our stuff back! It was a really fun time, and we were SO proud of our posters!
