Rain? In So-Cal? In September? In this economy?! Given some of our lovely students' reactions to a bit of precipitation, you'd think they'd melt. Maybe they will. Who am I to judge? In any case, another fantastic week from these amazing students! Their humor, sense of community, and care for each other continues to remain evident. 'Tis as lovely as the smell of rain to me.
Reminders: NO SCHOOL 9/23 - ROSH HASHANA; NO SCHOOL 10/2 - YOM KIPPUR
Also, don't forget to check out our brand new website! Maybe even take a look at our TCS Store page wherein you will find all of the awesome enrichment classes being provided by several TCS staff members.
This week: Fiction Unit; continued work on Social Studies Civilization Project.
We discussed how tone and mood shape narratives and settings, how altering either can affect the scope or delivery of a whole text. We also wrote quite a bit this week! They created monsters, wrote from the perspective of an animal, and let us know of a time when they had to be brave.Â
As a whole, fifth graders got a taste of how assignments are given and in what quantity. We are of course providing plenty of class time to complete them. And the students are rising to the challenge of a fifth grade workload!
Next week: Finish up Fiction Unit (will most likely have a test end of next week or early the following week -- a study guide will be provided).
This week: Place value.
Students took a quiz this week regarding place value, particularly decimal place value. And they did a fantastic job! Additionally, we randomly generated our own five digit decimals and utilized them in a "horse race". Random chance + self-generated numbers + knowledge of decimal place value = fun (yay)!
Next week: Finish place value unit; begin whole number computation (order of operations, 3x2 multiplication/division, et al.)
We continued exploring the Mindfulness Pillar this week. Big props to the students for using kind words towards themselves, particularly when redirecting their thoughts from either outside or internal distractions.
We created our own handshakes this week! They came up with a group/pair handshake that was complex and slightly silly, and then presented it to the rest of the class.
Additionally, the return of crab rave! (Crab rave is not responsible for feeling like you're old, that your knees just don't work the way they used to, or even knowing what crab rave is. Ask your child if crab rave is right for you!)
