As we gear up for open house, the children are loving the unit on farm animals. This week we read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka. In this fun story, A. Wolf tries to clear his name by explaining that he was not at fault for the misleading tale of the three little pigs, but rather that the misunderstanding began because he simply wanted a cup of sugar for his granny. Along the way, he has a case of severe allergies and just so happens to blow the little pigs’ homes down.
With this important lesson, we incorporated a little bit of STEM by creating art sculptures of our own! During the story, we were excited to ask the children what makes a strong home. Some of the children shared ideas like wood, sticks, bricks, and concrete. We then got to work making our own concoctions of flour, salt, and water to create papier-mâché art. We can't wait for you to see the finished product at open house!
On Wednesday and Thursday, we learned about horses. Horses are amazing animals that can sleep standing up, have eyes on the sides of their heads to see almost all around them, and can run just hours after being born. They are very social, communicate with their ears, and love to live in families called herds. Baby horses are called foals, and they can walk and run very soon after they are born.
We read Sophie Blackall’s book If I Was a Horse, a whimsical children’s book about a child imagining the freedom of being a horse. In the book, the child imagines living life as a horse, exploring everyday scenarios like sleeping standing up, galloping, and interacting with siblings through fantastical equine adventures. We made our own mares and stallions using recycled materials and paint, we are ready to gallop for Open House!
This week in music with Teacher Brian, we continued to learn the words to our spring sing songs, as well as some choreography! Between songs, the children were so happy to get some movement activities, as they always ask Mr. Brian to play the piano. We can’t wait to see you for the spring sing on May 21st at 5:45 PM! The children have been hard at work, and they can’t wait to show you what a beautiful job they have been doing!
