Reading, Spelling & Math Homework Expectation
The 4th grade team hopes this note finds you rested and ready to begin the school year. We know how busy families are with extracurricular activities and family obligations so we want the time you spend with your child each night to be a time that is stress free. For this reason, we emphasize two important homework assignments each week. Your son/daughter is expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes a day. Students will also bring home a math review sheet and spelling packet on Monday evenings. These packets are due Friday morning. Each morning when we greet your son/daughter at the door, we will check their S.A.B. and make sure that parents and/or guardians have signed off acknowledging that their son/daughter completed their reading and/or math homework. Fourth grade is going to be a year of great growth in the area of reading! Math gets more difficult in 4th grade and you can expect that your child will have math problems sent home regularly. We are appreciative of your help in making sure that your nightly routine incorporates a time for homework completion. It is our belief that by completing math problems and reading consistently, good habits will be formed that will help him/her be successful not only throughout this year but as they transition into the upper grade levels. Our goal is to have students have optimum growth in their academics while having time to balance other activities and family time in order to enhance their social and emotional well-being as well.
If your child completes the daily math assignment during class and you believe your child would benefit from spending time doing additional work, here are some topics and skills that we encourage your son/daughter to spend time learning.
Review the weekly spelling list
Do an activity that relates to the virtue of the week
Memorize multiplication and division tables
Memorize the 50 states and capitals
Write a research paper or story based on something that interests you (eg. traveling, fashion, saints, athletes…)
Make a slideshow about anything that you want to find out more about (eg. gardening, pets, gems, jokes…)
Practice typing skills
Finally, there will be three larger homework assignments given throughout the year which include: a family heritage research project, a state report culminating activity and an invention fair creation. These longer projects may require help from an adult. Information will come home in advance for these assignments.
We are excited to partner with you to help your child be successful at school!
Love, Ms. Bri, Ms. Molly, Mrs. Menke, and Mrs. Donahue
