The Four Areas of Focus stand on the foundational ideas that greatest potential for student growth and achievement occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of their learners and learners see themselves as their own teachers. These represent the multiple stakeholders and their roles in evidencing impact and making learning visible.
Learning
Learning focuses primarily on how students learn. To what extent do learners think and act in ways that demonstrate they know how to learn? How do learners engage in self-reflecting, self-monitoring, self-evaluating, and self-regulating. Proposals that exemplify Learning will focus on the deliberate practices and thinking of learners that makes their learning visible and demonstrates that they see themselves as their own teachers.
Teaching
Teaching focuses on the deliberate thinking and practices of teachers. To what extent do teachers think and act to make learning visible so that learners build their capacity to see themselves as their own teachers. Proposals that exemplify Teaching will focus on the day-to-day decisions within the classroom. For example, how do teachers translate the research on what works best into specific learning experiences within the context of their own classroom?
Leading
The potential for collective teacher efficacy to amplify student learning cannot be overstated. With that being said, the thinking and actions of instructional leaders are directly related to the culture and climate of schools and classrooms. Leading puts the deliberate thinking and practices of leaders at the forefront of evidencing impact and making learning visible in a school building or district. Proposals exemplifying this will focus on building teacher expertise, efficacy, and effectiveness across the learning environment.
Equity, Identities, and Belonging
The previous three areas of focus demand that learning, teaching, and leading focuses on all learners. Teachers and leaders must see learning through the eyes of all learners. Teachers and leaders must foster, nurture, and sustain student agency in all learners. How does the school community promote the humanity for all of the learners in our schools and classrooms? What deliberate thinking and practices seek to ensure that all learners are thriving in our schools and classrooms?
As you develop and submit your proposal please consider the theme of Showtime: Lights, Learning, Action, the Areas of Focus of Visible Learning, and how you make learning visible and evidence the impact in your schools and classrooms. Acceptance of your proposal will be contingent upon how the work of you and your colleagues exemplifies the implementation of what works best within the context of:
Equity, Identities and Belonging
Learning
Teaching
Leading
Proposals must not only identify which area(s) of focus they exemplify, but how the work within the proposal evidences impact through making learning visible.
