CHANGES THIS SEMESTER:
Projects will have deadlines before the end of the semester (3/22, 5/17 and 6/14) to help prevent students from getting behind. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, there will be no extensions on these projects so that you have time to complete all of them.
Homework should be done outside of class . . . so that you can maximize shop time. There won't be much, but when it is assigned, please do it.
Mr. K will be more focused on the safety score. Using equipment improperly (or handling sleds, etc...) will be infractions. Remember -- if he sees a phone during class (even in the classroom), that will be a deduction. If you think you need your phone for some reason, ASK FIRST.
Clean-up scores will receive increased scrutiny. You need to continue to clean something needing cleaning when your task is done. Wandering around doing something that is not needed or simply easy does not count.
Journal scores will be impacted by tardies. You need to get here on time so you can listen to initial instructions and reminders.
IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE A POP BY ITS DUE DATE, YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT AND MR. K WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH A PROJECT TO DO OF HIS CHOICE.
When you write POP's, you will still list all steps, but steps will be grouped by day. 12 full periods = 100 points worth of project. While you do the project, you will not be strictly held accountable to getting everything done each day as indicated on your POP. Writing the POP's this way will improve the process that assigns point value to projects. If you wonder how much time a step will require, please consult your teacher.
Items that must be finished for this semester:
All smaller lab exercises and assigned homework.
300 points worth of projects of your choice, however EACH PROJECT MUST INCORPORATE THE USE OF TECHNIQUES OR TOOLS THAT ARE NEW TO YOU. OBTAIN VERBAL APPROVAL BEFORE STARTING WORK ON ANY POP.
No team projects.
Student projects must be unique -- students are not to make the same thing as another student.
Everyone will be required to submit two objects to display at the Mid Willamette Valley Woodworkers Guild Show to be held at the Corvallis Public Library from April 25th - April 28th. One object MUST be the first project you complete this semester. The second can be anything you have created in the past. Students will get their work returned to them. This will be your semester outreach.
Students were asked to look at the Woodworking Project Examples Website (you must be logged into your school Google Account to access this website) to generate project ideas for this next semester. While this website categorizes projects by point value, the teacher and student will work together to determine the number of points to be awarded. Generally, all 100-point projects can be made more complex, while aspects of larger projects on this website can be simplified.
Generally speaking, a 100-point project should require approximately 12 class periods to complete.
Students must first get all project ideas approved by the instructor before starting a POP using this POP template. The best place to start after getting approval is with a drawing. YES -- YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN DRAWING EVEN IF YOU ARE WORKING OFF OF ONE YOU FOUND ELSEWHERE. At least a sketch will be necessary for Mr. K to be able to ascertain an appropriate point value.
Students worked on project ideas for the period.
When trying to think about incorporating new tools and techniques into your projects, consider these resources:
Using chisels and the Tormek sharpening system.
Using hand planes (extensively), sharpening them as needed, and setting them up to cut properly.
The steps and procedures Mr. K discussed earlier this year are summarized here: Steps for Sharpening Hand Plane Blades and Chisels.
The Tormek jig to use when sharpening hand planes and chisels: SE-77 Square Edge Jig Instructions.
CVHS Veritas Plane Safety Page (use the instruction manuals to guide you with proper plane set-up.)
Incorporating hand-made dovetail joints in a project. Using a chisel and hand saw, make a simple dove tailed joint having at least two tails and three pins. It is strongly recommended that you watching this video (despite its length) and guiding your work by it. You DO NOT need to join two pieces of different thicknesses.
How to Cut a Dovetail Joint by Hand -- by Matt Estlea.
Using the Shaper Origin for either an inlay, or to create something using joinery produced by the Shaper (like a box joint).
2nd Semester Project Plan Assignment; complete this ONLY after receiving verbal approval for all 300 points of projects. (DUE: 2/12, by the end of the class period)

DAILY JOURNAL: CVHS and Mr. K will be hosting an after-school woodworking camp for 6th grade girls (Women of the Woods -- WOW) in late November and early December. Students will be making cutting boards. Mr. K needs some high school mentors to help keep everyone safe and provide assistance in the shop. The goal of the camp is to try and encourage more non-traditional student participation in the woodshop (and related classes). Students from Linus Pauling will be here Monday November 27th - Thursday, November 30 from approximately 4 to 6 PM each day. Students from Cheldelin will be here the following week at the same times (Monday December 4th - Thursday December 7th). Are you interested and willing to assist? Today, please come see Mr. K and let him know whether or not you are interested (yes, come see him regardless of your response). Also put your response in your journal. This would satisfy your Outreach requirement for the semester.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to use the Tormek T-8 sharpener to sharpen chisels and plane blades.
DAILY JOURNAL: No entry required today.
Hand tools are a must if you wish to produce high quality woodworking. That said, hand tools only help you if they are sharp, and kept sharp. Chisels will be especially helpful with the mallet project. Today's focus is on the use of the Tormek T-8 sharpening system and sharpening stones to sharpen hand plane blades and chisels.
In the shop Mr. K showed students how to use the Tormek T-8 system to sharpen chisels and plane blades. Students will be given a quiz on this system on Friday so students were encouraged to pay attention, ask questions, and take notes. Students will be allowed to use one page of hand-written notes during the quiz. The manual and additional information for the Tormek T-8 is located on the safety page (under the "Maintenance Equipment and Tools" subpage / heading and under the Sharpening Page).
Suggested materials to use in preparation for the quiz:
Notes you take during the demonstrations in class.
These SE-77 Square Edge Jig Instructions , which is also posted on the Sharpening Page on the Safety Website.
The Tormek T-8 Intro Video, which is also posted on the Sharpening Page on the Safety Website.
The steps and procedures Mr. K discussed are summarized hereon Step #2: Steps for Sharpening Hand Plane Blades and Chisels and is also located on the Sharpening Page on the Safety Website. ONLY LOOK AT STEP #2 -- ignore the other steps on this sheet. We will not use a secondary bevel this year, or the water stones.

Starting today, students have been assigned specific clean-up tasks. During clean-up at the end of each period, students are expected to first complete their tasks as soon as possible (floor brooms cannot sweep before hand brooms are finished brushing off equipment and tables). When finished with their own task, students are to assist someone else and or sweep. Everyone stays working the entire time until Mr. K indicates clean-up is finished at the end of the period. Students receive points each day based on whether their assigned area is cleaned, and whether they stayed busy the entire time during clean-up.
DAILY JOURNAL: Find your clean-up tasks (linked at the top of this calendar page so it is always easy to find). Write out your complete clean-up task(s). Do not just write "band saws".

Angled Box Project. (DUE: TBA)
OBJECTIVE: Students will master the general safety practices associated with use of the shop, as well as specific practices associated with the band saws, scroll saws, floor sanders, and drill presses.
SAFETY TESTING: Safety testing will be completed largely in an autonomous mode. The basic procedure will look like this:
Student participates in the classroom demonstration and discussion of the safety associated with a piece of equipment. This may include guided use of the equipment. If absent from class, the student watches the provided video and/or reads the printed guidelines provided on the CV Safety Website for the equipment in question.
Student asks the instructor any clarifying questions. At times, some test cuts on the equipment may be performed with the instructor present BEFORE the safety test is completed.
The student will complete the online safety test in Canvas.
After the test is submitted on Canvas, students must complete test corrections, providing stand-alone statements that indicate the key concepts for any question improperly answered on the test. A hardcopy of these safety test corrections must be turned into the turn-in basket in the room.
Videos and printed resources (but no other student or individual) can be used by the student to complete the online tests.
SAFETY SCORE: Students will receive a safety score approximately once a quarter. Students begin with a full score. While working in the shop over the course of the quarter, points are deducted from this score each time the student is observed using a machine improperly or otherwise not complying with safety rules and procedures. Score deductions depend upon the severity of the infraction. Minor errors will not incur a deduction. So . . . best practice this year when you are out in the shop? When in doubt about something, ASK!
DAILY JOURNAL: What do you need to do when you miss a question on a safety test before the test is considered complete? Be specific in your response.
Today, students continued autonomous work associated with shop safety and The First Cuts Project.
When finished with this, student are to make a second push stick (you will need to complete the safety testing for the Router to do this). Then, students are to continue to work through the safety testing posted on Canvas (and listed to the right). Students are cautioned to take their time on the safety testing. The first score you get on the safety tests will be what goes into the gradebook.
Router Safety Test (DUE 9/22)
Push Stick Project (DUE 9/22)
Chop Saw Safety Test (DUE 10/2)
Jointer Safety Test (DUE 10/2)
Planer Safety Test (DUE 10/2)
Table Saw Safety Test (DUE 10/2)
OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.
For the first semester, students will be asked to do two projects (first this Angled Box Project, then this Mortise & Tenon Mallet Project), and then complete a third 100 point project of their choice. For reference, equate 100 points worth of project to 12 full class periods of work.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were asked to investigate 3rd project possibilities and attempt to identify what they wish their third project to be. The "Project Examples" link at the top of this calendar page might be helpful for considering options. For their journal today, students are to identify possible project ideas into their journal. For each idea,
Insert either a picture of something you wish to make, or a picture of a hand-drawn simple sketch you make so that the instructor has an idea of what it is you wish to make.
Name your project idea.
Indicate the new tool or technique you will use in this project THAT YOU HAVEN'T USED TO THIS POINT IN YOUR WOODWORKING CAREER. Using a tool in a substantially new way would count as a new technique. THIS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR YOUR THIRD PROJECT.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.
DAILY ROUTINE: Starting today, the daily routine to start each class should look like this:
Go to your locker.
Remove your safety glasses.
Place your phone into your locker (if you don't have a phone, come get a NO-PHONE token from Mr. K). Mr. K will be taking attendance based on phones / tokens within the lockers.
Open your Woodworking Daily Journal document and add a heading with today's date below previous entries.
Navigate to this web page. Under DAILY JOURNAL, complete what is requested of you, adding it to your single document that is your Woodworking Daily Journal.
When finished, submit your revised document to the Canvas assignment (yes, you resubmit each day of class).
Eventually at this point you can then proceed to the shop to work on projects unless Mr. K indicates otherwise.
You will keep adding to your journal each day. Doing this will allow Mr. K to get the class started and take attendance while you are learning/reviewing/completing something that is needed.
If you are absent from class, you must still complete your daily journal.
Journal grading will be unannounced -- meaning, grading will occur on whatever is (or isn't) submitted to Canvas. Why? Because journals should be maintained and kept up-to-date. Missing entries will receive a zero for that journal assessment.
Journal entries MUST be correct when there are correct responses to be made. Therefore, do what it takes to make sure you know what correct responses should be. At other times, entries will be graded on the quality of responses. The journal is your instructor's way of ensuring that everyone knows and understands key pieces of information. If you are ever unsure, ask for help!
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were directed to open up a blank Google Doc, and then save it as their Woodworking Daily Journal. For today's entry, answer the following questions regarding the course syllabus:
How much is an assignment penalized if turned in late?
What must you do to request an extension on an assignment?
If you wish to replace a score on something, what must you do?
To be considered for rounding of your final grade at the end of the semester, what must be true?
The CV Safety Website (linked at the top of this website) was introduced. The instructor explained how this site is to be used, pointing out the location of instructional and safety videos and information for all equipment in the shop.
The band saws and scroll saws were discussed today. Students completed safety testing (and test corrections as needed) for these two pieces of equipment. Time permitting, students were allowed to work on the First Cuts Project on these pieces of equipment.
The First Cuts Project (DUE 9/15)
Complete the Band Saw Safety Test, and do test corrections as necessary. (DUE 9/13) If absent today, first watch the Band Saw Safety Video on the CV Safety Website, before taking the test.
Complete the Scroll Saw Safety Test, and do test corrections as necessary. (DUE 9/13) If absent today, first watch the Scroll Saw Safety video on the CV Safety Website, before taking the test.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand the difference between woodworking and carpentry, and the hands-on experiences that are possible this semester.
ANNOUNCEMENT: At the beginning of the year, there may be some small projects and activities repeated from last year in order to get the class going. Unlike in previous years, Mr. K will be teaching a second class simultaneously during Woodworking 2 which forces some of this repetition. Therefore, students will be repeating the First Cuts and Push Stick Projects at the beginning of the year, but will then be separating from the other class with the first large project of the year. Your patience is requested. New activities will be started as quickly as possible.
Students completed the Initial Class Survey.
Students were given a brief introduction to the class.
Students were assigned a pair of safety glasses and a locker to place them within.
Students were given a tour of the shop and surrounding facilities. While out in the shop, students reviewed the General Safety Guidelines on the safety website and then completed the General Shop Safety Test on Canvas.
Time permitting, discussion was started on the first pieces of shop equipment to be used in the class.
Complete this Initial Class Survey. (DUE 9/6, done in class)
Read (and have your parents read) this Class Syllabus and Contract. Print the last page. Sign this contract as required. Take a picture of this contract. Submit this picture on Canvas. If you do not have a printer, you may place signatures on a blank piece of paper and indicate that you have read and agree to the class contract, take a picture of this, and submit this to Canvas.
