OBJECTIVE: Students will create a complete Plan of Procedures (POP) for a project that they would be able to make here at school.
Mr K spent some time in class explaining how a Plan of Procedures (POP) should be created. The document should be complete to the point where someone could follow the procedure and be able to create the object as desired by the author. Students will be creating a POP of something they wish to make for the remainder of the year.
The POP that you have been provided for the Framed Art Project can be used as a guide for what is expected. It has everything except a calculation of how many board feet of material you require. To determine this number, you can just assume rectangular shapes. For instance, on the frame pieces, you could simply determine how many board feet are in two frame pieces that are 12" x 1.5" x 3/4", and two that are 10" in length, and not worry about the wood that is lost when the miters are cut.

In class, you are to obtain teacher approval for a project that would be appropriate to make here at school with the time remaining in class. To complete this assignment, you must share your screen and show one of your teachers a picture or a sketch you make of something you would like to create. If you are in Cohort C, you must still complete this, and the accompanying POP. Planning work is an important aspect of woodworking. (DUE 4/22)
Use this POP Template to create a POP for the project you receive teacher approval for. You must open this template first, go to the FILE menu, and select "Make a Copy" in order to obtain a version of the template that you can edit. This POP Grading Rubric will be used to grade your completed POP, except the score will be 30 points rather than just 15 points. (DUE 4/30)

The pen tool is the focus of today's lesson. There are three primary uses of the pen tool:
Simply clicking at each point with the mouse and releasing results in straight lines connecting all anchor points.
Clicking and dragging at each point allows you to create a curve using handles and tangent lines that can later be edited to modify the final shape.
Clicking, dragging, and then using the SHIFT key will allow one to break the tangent line so that you can have two different slopes (one going into, and one leaving the anchor point) so that you can have a sharp point on your shape.
To better master this tool, the pen tool game can be played before starting the Inkscape Practice - Level 2 assignment.

OBJECTIVE: Students will learn the basic steps and techniques of sanding.
Starting today, we will be attempting to move to a more autonomous approach to the online portion of the class. One of your instructors will typically start the class and take attendance. At this time, questions can be answered as necessary. And then, every 20 minutes or so an instructor will check in. We are doing this so that both instructors can be available to assist students who are here in hands-on activities. This will increase the amount of time students can come in to school to work with the equipment.
As a rule, students should always check this webpage each day, even if you are scheduled to come in for each day. Moving forward, at least one assignment will be earmarked as an option assignment for students who come in to school to work on projects. Students who cannot come in to school should do all assignments.
While there is no penalty for late work, and despite the fact that some students might be at school on any given day, assignments will still have a due date associated with them in the attempt to help students pace themselves and not fall behind.
Sanding is usually a mandatory step before finishing any woodworking project. Today's assignment is designed to give you an idea of what sanding is all about, and how it should be completed.

OBJECTIVE: Students will understand that being safe is an attitude, a state-of-mind. It is something that one must actively think about at all times, every day.
The procedure for signing up for in-person learning was discussed. Students were reminded that they may always sign up for any open slot up to two days in the future. Otherwise, for now, students should try to schedule themselves no more than once every two weeks or so. Cohorts will meet weekly, however there are also more people during each of those times. As we move to a more asynchronous online learning model, we may be able to open up more time slots for hands-on experiences.
Students either worked alone or arranged themselves into pairs to develop a list of general safety rules that they feel might be important to follow when working here at school.
After a period of time, students were brought back together. Each group/student was asked to contribute a rule they think is important. In this way, instructors and students discussed general safety rules that should always be followed when working with wood and equipment.
For the rest of the period, students worked at their own pace to complete the day's assignment.
General safety rules that are to be followed when working at school are located on the home page of the CV Safety Website. Read through these rules.

OBJECTIVE: Students will understand how wood is measured, and how to determine and properly use the term "board-foot".
One of the primary considerations when thinking about a woodworking project, is the material to be used. With wood, there are very specific ways quantities are discussed and calculated. The term board-foot was introduced and explained. Additionally, wood quantities depend upon the type of wood (softwood vs. hardwood). Measuring Lumber Notes .
Students used the rest of the period to complete the assigned worksheet (to the right). NOTE: work must be shown; that is what matters! The answers have been provided so you know that you are doing it correctly.
Wood Quantities Worksheet. Please note -- the answers are provided at the bottom of the worksheet. For credit, you must show HOW you obtain those answers. You can do your work on a normal sheet of paper. Then you can take a picture of your work and submit the picture(s) to Canvas. (DUE 2/25, at the beginning of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand the nature of how wood grows, and its impact upon flaws found in wood.
Wood as a material, and how wood grows in a tree was discussed. The way wood grows in a tree determines the quality of the lumber we obtain from the tree. Typical flaws found in wood were discussed.
Students were given time to complete the assignment for today.
You DO NOT have to do the above. Instead, your assignment for the week is to make a drawing and create a Plan of Procedures (POP) of a first project you would like to try and do when you come in as you can to school. Use this POP Template when generating your POP. You will need to make a copy and then add it to your drive. You will not have edit rights to this file when you first open it. All parts of this template should be completed. When finished, turn it into Canvas. Drawings are absolutely required. POP's will be graded using the following POP Grading Rubric. Your first POP is due at 3:00 PM on Friday, 2/26.
Complete this Wood as a Material Scavenger Hunt. Submit to Canvas. (DUE 2/23, at the beginning of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to create a three-view orthographic projection drawing of a 3D object, and will be able to correctly dimension it.
Students who had not yet, presented their Tool Review slides as necessary.
Students worked on producing their Second Orthographic Drawing (see the description to the right).
Second Orthographic Drawing. Students are to produce a drawing of this object: 2nd Orthographic Drawing Object. Assume the units for this drawing are inches. This drawing should have three scaled, aligned views (front, top, right side). All dimensions necessary for someone to create this object in the shop should be included on the drawing, and all drawing standards should be followed. When finished, take a picture of your drawing and submit this picture to Canvas. (DUE 2/22, at the beginning of class)

Students how had not yet, presented their Tool Review slides as necessary.
Technical communication is different than other forms of communication. Specifically, details matter, and clarity is critical. One of the easiest ways to accomplish both is through the use of drawings. Drawings of 3D objects are made in a consistent fashion so that everyone readily understands what is being communicated. The predominant manner in which 3D objects are shown on 2D drawings is through the use of orthographic projections.
Watch this How to Make an Orthographic Projection Drawing Video (Mr K apologizes for the quality -- with more time, it certainly could be improved). While watching, use a blank piece of paper (preferably graph paper, but any paper will do), a pencil with an eraser, and a ruler with inch measurements (if you do not have a ruler, any thing that can serve as a straight edge will work) and duplicate the three views you see Mr. K drawing in the video. Stop the video as needed while you do your drawing. You must use a straight-edge for all your lines, and it must be done neatly. Take a picture of the drawing that you produce and submit the picture in to Canvas. (DUE 2/17, at the beginning of class) DO NOT DISCARD YOUR DRAWING. WE WILL USE IT LATER THIS WEEK FOR ANOTHER ASSIGNMENT.
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand various types of tools and equipment used in woodworking, and begin to identify a potential project they wish to build that could be made with these limited pieces of equipment.

OBJECTIVE: Students will understand various types of tools and equipment used in woodworking, and begin to identify a potential project they wish to build that could be made with these limited pieces of equipment.
Students were first asked to brainstorm the things they think should be considered before starting a woodworking project.
The instructors took student input and reviewed the following list of items that are often important things to consider. Things to Consider BEFORE Starting a Woodworking Project, class notes.
One of the first things that must be identified before starting a project, is to determine the tools you have to use, and their limitations. To help understand the equipment available to students this semester, students were assigned the Tool Review Assignment. All students were assigned a tool, completed a slide for that tool on the class slide presentation, and will present it to the rest of the class tomorrow.
Students worked on this assignment for the rest of the period.
Tool Review Assignment (DUE 2/12 -- the slide should be done by the beginning of class; students will present their slide on 2/12 in class).
