THIS YEAR IN CLASS:  

• There will be no daily journal in this class.

• Students must complete 300 points of project work each semester.  You will be working largely on your own while Mr. K is teaching the Woods 1 class that meets during the same period.  That said, whenever you have questions, please come ask him.  Occasionally, you may be asked to assist Woods 1 students, but this will not be frequent.

• SALES! -- This year, students are encouraged to make things to sell to others.  Students will be allowed to keep 50% of the sales price of whatever you sell.  However, the 50% that goes to the school MUST cover the cost of materials and supplies as approved by your instructor.  If this is something you want to pursue, talk to MR. K.  It might be that the 300 point project model isn't the best fit for you.  That said, Mr. K does want you engaged in advanced woodworking techniques this year.

• As with last year, each semester students will be asked to complete one or more outreach activities extending beyond the classroom.  For the first semester this will include either submitting something to the school's talent show in the winter or participation in activities such as Women of the Woods after-school camps.  For the second semester, students will be asked to submit two pieces to the Mid Willamette Valley Woodworking Guild’s annual show in the spring. 

• All students will eventually have a clean-up assignment and will assist with daily shop cleaning (and receive a daily score) as in years past.

• SAFETY TESTING:  While you have used the equipment before, you still must complete safety testing.  Mr. K wishes this to be as efficient as possible while still being effective in refreshing you on safety procedures.  For you, safety testing will be completed largely in an autonomous mode.  The basic procedure will look like this:

  1. Student may participate in the classroom demonstration and discussion of the safety associated with a piece of equipment as it takes place.  The student watches / reviews the provided video and/or reads the printed guidelines provided on the CV Safety Website for the  equipment in question.  In some cases you may be so familiar with a piece of equipment that you can move right to the test.  However, your instructor requests that you review if you feel the need.  The score you receive on each safety test will be the score entered into the gradebook 

  2. The student will complete the online safety test in Canvas.

  3. After the test is submitted on Canvas, students must complete test corrections, providing stand-alone statements that indicate the key concepts for any question improperly answered on the test.  A hardcopy of these safety test corrections must be turned into the turn-in basket in the room.

  4. Videos and printed resources (but no other student or individual) can be used by the student to complete the online tests.

• SAFETY SCORE:  Students will receive a safety score approximately once a quarter.  Students begin with a full score.  While working in the shop over the course of the quarter, points are deducted from this score each time the student is observed using a machine improperly or otherwise not complying with safety rules and procedures.  Score deductions depend upon the severity of the infraction.  Minor errors will not incur a deduction.  So . . . best practice this year when you are out in the shop?  When in doubt about something, ASK!

DAILY ROUTINE:

• Go to your locker.   

• Remove your safety glasses.  (YOU WILL BE MARKED TARDY IF YOUR GLASSES ARE STILL IN THE LOCKER WHEN THE BELL RINGS).

• This year there are absolutely no phones or earbuds allowed during the school day.  Per district policy, if Mr. K sees them, even in a pocket on your person but not out, school policy requires him to take the phone.

• Navigate to this web page.  Check for any announcements.  Occasionally, there may be something you will be prompted to do.  If so, complete what is requested of you.  BE SURE TO DO THIS EACH DAY -- IT WILL BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY FOR MR. K, WHO IS TEACHING WOODS 1 SIMULTANEOUSLY EACH PERIOD, TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU.  AT TIMES, POINTS WILL BE TIED TO WHAT HE MIGHT REQUEST.

• Resume work on your projects.

WHAT TO START WORKING ON TODAY AND GOING FORWARD:

• 1. Come obtain a pair of safety glasses from Mr. K (check with him -- hopefully he has yours still from last year).  Pick an empty locker in the safety glass cabinet, and then put your name on the sheet above the locker.

  2. Complete the Initial Class Survey (DUE TODAY).

  3. Print the class contract, if needed, so it can be signed at home and turn it in before the due date.

  4. Completing safety testing (due by 9/15).

  5. Completing your Semester Plan.

  6. Completing your POP for your first project.
