- OBJECTIVE: The shop and classroom will be cleaned for the summer.
- Students assisted with shop clean-up, and received a score based upon participation and effort.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will work on either of their first two semester projects: a cutting board and a turned lidded box, or on their third project.
- The first thing students need to do today is go to the cabinet and remove anything they want to keep. Mr. K will be cleaning the cabinet out as you work.
- Students were also warned to pick-up and put away all materials from previous or current projects that are within the classroom or shop today. After today, if materials that Mr. K knows are yours are still left out, there will be reductions of your clean-up score.
- This is the last day to work on all projects. By the end of the period, all projects, no matter their status, must be turned in to Mr. K with a grade sheet. Students in 3rd Period must turn in their projects and paperwork on Thursday, but can finish last minute details on Friday and resubmit if they wish. No shop work will take place on Friday afternoon after school.

- Students completed their daily journals. There are only eight class periods remaining in this semester, and only seven of those will be work days to get projects done. The journals today are intended to help students map out a path for getting their projects done by the end of the semester. Journal tasks should reference POP steps when possible. Milestones and things to be completed by the end of each day must be concrete and specific. These journals were printed and taped to the whiteboard. Each day, at the end of each class period, students will go to their timeline on this journal print-out and verify they are still on track for completing their projects. If they are not, students will place a post-it note with an unhappy face on it on their timeline. Students will also indicate on their timeline what they will do to catch back up.
- Queues for the lathes were filled out so that everyone has scheduled time on the lathes during the remaining periods. Students unable to get their work done with their assigned days will need to finish their turning outside of class. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO FINISH UP OUTSIDE OF CLASS -- MR. K CANNOT GUARANTEE HIS AVAILABILITY AFTER SCHOOL EVERY DAY. Lathe Queues Spring 2019.

- OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to begin POP's for either of their first two semester projects: a cutting board and a turned lidded box.
- Students completed a Daily Journal.
- Students will be asked to do three projects this semester. The first two, a cutting board and a turned lidded box, will require students to make their own POP's first. POP's must be checked and graded before students are allowed to begin work. Ideally, students would turn POP's in early so Mr. K can look at and grade them before you get to class to minimize your waiting.
- POP's should be submitted to Google Classroom. Drawings should be either scanned and inserted into the POP, or a picture taken and inserted. Do not omit the BOM and the board-foot calculation on your POPs.
- CUTTING BOARD -- the details:
- You might want to look online at some images of cutting boards to get an idea of what you want to do. But don't waste too much time doing this.
- Your design should have all grain for all pieces going in the same direction. If you have grain from adjacent pieces at right angles to one another, you have two problems that must be addressed. First, you have an end-grain glue joint. The joint will be weak and starved for glue unless you use sizing (Mr. K can explain) on the joint. Secondly, this joint will want to rip itself apart because remember -- wood expands more across the grain than along the grain. There are techniques you can use to make such a joint work, but it will require additional steps. To avoid this, try and keep all the grain of all your pieces of your cutting board going in the same general direction.
- Mr. K demonstrated proper lamination technique. The process of laminating boards together is described here: Flat Panel Lamination Instructions. YOU DO NOT NEED TO LIST ALL THESE STEPS IN YOUR POP. Include dry clamping and instructor check, and then gluing.
- Cutting board size is limited to 1.5 board feet. Your board can not be entirely made out of black walnut. Black walnut is expensive and should be limited.
- Be sure to call out the use of Titebond III glue (the glue in the bottle with the green cap). This is waterproof.
- You will want to use Butcher Block Conditioner as your finish -- it is food-safe. For your POP, you can just indicate this, but when it comes to actually installing it, you will want to read the directions on the bottle.
- TURNED LIDDED BOX -- the details:
- Watch this Turned Lidded Box Video, by the Wood Whisperer. The steps that Marc Spagnuolo suggests are listed below the video and can/should be used as the basis for the POP that YOU write.
- Students will need to glue up wood, but glue-ups should be oriented so that the grain of the wood is along the axis of the lathe (so that you will be turning long grain). If you stack pieces of wood perpendicular to this, you would need to turn end grain on two sides of your box . . . which is extremely difficult without the sharpest of tools.
- The diameter of your box should be 4" or less.
- Your drawing does not need to include all the fine details you plan on putting into your box, but should include overall dimensions (height, diameter), your planned wall thickness, and all details and dimensions associated with the mortise/tenon lid joint.
- Students getting their POP's completed and checked off were allowed to print their POP's and start work.

- OBJECTIVE: Students will understand how wood is measured and will be able to compute the number of board feet in a quantity of wood.
- There was no Daily Journal.
- Mr. K discussed various species of wood that are commonly found in the woodworking shop and used by woodworkers. Lecture Notes: Wood Species. Students were prompted to take some notes -- they can expect a quiz on this material. This blank Wood ID Chart was handed out so students could take notes.
- Mr. K also discussed the methods by which softwood and hardwood is measured, including board-foot calculations. Measuring Wood Lecture Notes.
- Students finished the period by completing this Board Foot Calculation Worksheet. This is due next period, and should be completed as homework if it does not get finished in class today.
- OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their Mallet or Initial Box Projects.

- Guidelines for the Mallet Head were given in class. All students were to write these things down:
- Before proceeding with the head, students must make a POP (using the template) for the construction of the head, the assembly of the head to the mallet, and the finishing of the mallet.
- The head should have an overall finished length of 4" (the wood you turn will need to be longer than this).
- For roughing , the corners of your block of wood should be cut off. Your instructor will likely do this for you on the table saw.
- The head should be first turned to a uniform diameter of 2.5".
- The last inch of each end of the head should be tapered to a diameter of 2". The taper profile should be straight.
- When making the tapers, it is suggested that you part the very end down to a 2" diameter first.

Student assignments will be rotated throughout the year. 3rd Period Clean-Up Assignments. 6th Period Clean-Up Assignments. Each day, when clean-up is called, students should do the following in this order:
- Clean up their materials at the work benches, putting away all their tools and returning their projects to the class cabinet. Return the Chromebook you are using to the Chromebook cart.
- Proceed to your assigned area of the shop and work until ALL tasks for your area are completed.
- When finished with your area, assist with other areas of the shop if needed.
- Students will be given a point each day for clean-up. When students are observed not doing their fair share on a given day, perhaps taking for instance as opposed to cleaning, they will not earn the point for that day. In truth, these should be easy points to earn.
