Students were given a hardcopy of the Forest Service HPDE Sign POP (linked to the right).
Students will once again make some signs for the forest service this year. However, this year there will be differences:
Each students will make two signs -- one will be standard with simple text, and one will be more oddly shaped signifying a trailhead area.
Signs will be make with CNC routing only (no laser engraving). Also, two-color plastic material will be used to make these signs. Using this material eliminates the need of painting white oak signs, eliminates maintenance in the future, and results in a sign that last much longer.
Students will be using V-Carve Pro software instead of Solidworks, Mastercam, and Illustrator to prepare files for CNC engraving. In most respects, this software is easier and more straight forward to use.
Mr. K used much of the period walking students through the process of using V-Carve Pro with emphasis placed upon vector and project set-up.

Fixing Common Woodworking Mistakes Video Assignment (DUE: 11/20 by the beginning of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students developed their woodworking skills by working on semester projects.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students watched this Deadpool Band Saw Box video as a class. Afterwards, answer the following questions in your journal:
Marc (the woodworker in the video) must saw the head into three pieces in order to get the parts that will be the drawers removed. What does he do to glue the odd-shaped head back up so that he can clamp it?
Everything about this box was cut using the bandsaw. What are two things you think Marc did ahead of time to ensure the greatest chance of success when using the bandsaw?
The deadpool band saw box was a creative idea. Think of another idea for a band saw box that would be equally creative (but you cannot use the same general idea -- for instance a head of something else where the eyes are the drawers).

Hand tools are a must if you wish to produce high quality woodworking. That said, hand tools only help you if they are sharp, and kept sharp. Chisels will be especially helpful with the mallet project. Today's focus is on the use of the Tormek T-8 sharpening system and sharpening stones to sharpen hand plane blades and chisels.
Students watched this Introductory Video for the Tormek T-8 Sharpening System.
In the shop Mr. K showed students how to use the Tormek T-8 system to sharpen chisels and plane blades. Students will be given a quiz on this system on Thursday so students were encouraged to pay attention, ask questions, and take notes. Students will be allowed to use one page of hand-written notes during the quiz. The manual and additional information for the Tormek T-8 is located on the safety page (under the "Maintenance Equipment and Tools" subpage / heading and under the Sharpening Page).
Suggested materials to use in preparation for the quiz:

DAILY JOURNAL: Answer the following questions:
What is a clearance block and when must one be used?
Explain how the dimensions of a rectangular piece of wood determine whether the rip fence, the miter gage, or a sled is used to cut the piece of wood on the table saw.
When is it okay to cut wood on the table saw without the use of either the rip fence, a miter gage, or a sled?
When ripping wood, guiding the wood with your hand is better than using a push stick -- you have more control. That said, when MUST you use a push stick when ripping wood with the rip fence on a table saw?
When cross-cutting something that is quite long on a sled and you determine you need someone else to help support the end of the board being cut, what should that person do?

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.
DAILY ROUTINE: Starting today, the daily routine to start each class should look like this:
Go to your locker.
Remove your safety glasses. (YOU WILL BE MARKED TARDY IF YOUR GLASSES ARE STILL IN THE LOCKER WHEN THE BELL RINGS)
Open your Woodworking 2 Daily Journal document and add a heading with today's date below previous entries.
Navigate to this web page. Under DAILY JOURNAL, complete what is requested of you, adding it to your single document that is your Woodworking Daily Journal.
When finished, submit your revised document to the Canvas assignment (yes, you resubmit each day of class).
Eventually at this point you can then proceed to the shop to work on projects unless Mr. K indicates otherwise.
You will keep adding to your journal each day. Doing this will allow Mr. K to get the class started and take attendance while you are learning/reviewing/completing something that is needed.
If you are absent from class, you must still complete your daily journal.
Journal grading will be unannounced -- meaning, grading will occur on whatever is (or isn't) submitted to Canvas. Why? Because journals should be maintained and kept up-to-date. Missing entries will receive a zero for that journal assessment.
Journal entries MUST be correct when there are correct responses to be made. Therefore, do what it takes to make sure you know what correct responses should be. At other times, entries will be graded on the quality of responses. The journal is your instructor's way of ensuring that everyone knows and understands key pieces of information. If you are ever unsure, ask for help!
Questions regarding the class and/or class syllabus were answered. Otherwise, the class in general was discussed.
SALES! -- This year, students are encouraged to make things to sell to others. Students will be allowed to keep 50% of the sales price of whatever you sell. However, the 50% that goes to the school MUST cover the cost of materials and supplies as approved by your instructor. If this is something you want to pursue, talke to MR. K. It might be that the 300 point project model isn't the best fit for you. That said, Mr. K does want you engaged in advanced woodworking techniques this year.
Each semester students will be asked to complete one or more outreach activities extending beyond the classroom. For the first semester this will include either submitting something to the school's talent show in the winter, creation of a project for someone else, or participation in activities such as Women of the Woods after-school camps. For the second semester, students will be asked to submit two pieces to the Mid Willamette Valley Woodworking Guild’s annual show in the spring.
All students will eventually have a clean-up assignment and will assist with daily shop cleaning (and receive a daily score) as in years past.
SAFETY SCORE: Students will receive a safety score approximately once a quarter. Students begin with a full score. While working in the shop over the course of the quarter, points are deducted from this score each time the student is observed using a machine improperly or otherwise not complying with safety rules and procedures. Score deductions depend upon the severity of the infraction. Minor errors will not incur a deduction. So . . . best practice this year when you are out in the shop? When in doubt about something, ASK!
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were directed to open up a blank Google Doc, and then save it as their Woodworking Daily Journal. For today's entry, answer the following questions regarding the course syllabus:
How much is an assignment penalized if turned in late?
What must you do to request an extension on an assignment?
If you wish to replace a score on something, what must you do?
To be considered for rounding of your final grade at the end of the semester, what must be true?
Students continued to work on safety testing.

Students were assigned a pair of safety glasses and a locker to place them within.
Students were taken to the shop and the new drill presses were demonstrated.
Students need to complete all of the safety testing again. Students were allowed to begin this process. In general, it is recommended that students go and watch the video on the CV Safety Page for the piece of equipment, complete the online safety test for that equipment on Canvas, and then complete and submit test corrections as necessary. For full test correction points, responses must be stand-alone -- complete and with context -- and must address the central concept(s) of the question missed.
Complete this Initial Class Survey. (DUE 9/3, done in class)
Read (and have your parents read) this Pre-Engineering Class Syllabus & Contract. Print the last page. Sign this contract as required. Take a picture of this contract. Submit this picture on Canvas.
