ANNOUNCEMENT: Semester project scores in Canvas have been marked as "missing" if a project has not been submitted yet. Projects must be submitted by Wednesday, June 15th at 3:05 PM to be graded. This is being done to avoid unexpected surprises to grades at the end of the course when it is too late for students to do anything about it.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Students were reminded that when projects are glued up and left on a table clamped to dry, that they must find a time to come in, unclamp, and put their project away. From now on, students should add on the note they leave with their project with their name and the time it was clamped, an indication of when they will come in to put it away. Since so few students have been doing this, Mr. K is forced to start taking a point off the final project score each time a student fails to deal with their project and just leaves it out. Comments will be placed in Canvas to keep track of this. If a student cannot come back in to put their project away, they may talk with Mr. K and he will be happy to put it away for you, but the student needs to take responsibility and talk to Mr. K.
ANNOUNCEMENT: The CV talent show on 4/8 will have a static display of the student-created projects display during the intermission. Mr. K encourages students to enter their completed work for judging. If interested, please get your submission to Ms. Stone's room by 4/4.

For their projects, students must first get their idea approved by the instructor, and then write a complete POP using this POP template. The best place to start is with a drawing. YES -- YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN DRAWING EVEN IF YOU ARE WORKING OFF OF ONE YOU FOUND ELSEWHERE.
FOR ALL STUDENTS:
POP #1 (for 100 points of project) (DUE 2/24, end of class)
POP #2 (for 100 points of project) (DUE 2/24, end of class)
POP #3 (for 100 points of project) (DUE 2/24, end of class)

Woods 2 students will be given a number of assignments to complete over the next several weeks to expand their skills that might be applied to their woodworking projects. Some of the topics have been previously discussed in class (some review will likely be necessary). Other topics will be new.
By the end of the 3rd Quarter, Woods 2 students must:
CHISEL SHARPENING PROFICIENCY: Bring Mr. K a chisel requiring sharpening (he must agree sharpening is necessary), and use the Tormek system to sharpen the chisel either by honing an existing secondary bevel, or grinding a new secondary bevel (and primary bevel if needed).
HAND PLANE SHARPENING PROFICIENCY: Bring Mr. K a plane blade requiring sharpening (he must agree sharpening is necessary), and use the Tormek system to sharpen the plane blade either by honing an existing secondary bevel, or grinding a new secondary bevel (and primary bevel if needed).
The steps and procedures Mr. K discussed earlier this year are summarized here: Steps for Sharpening Hand Plane Blades and Chisels.
The Tormek jig to use when sharpening hand planes and chisels: SE-77 Square Edge Jig Instructions.
PLANE SHAVINGS: Start with a disassembled plane (checked by Mr. K), reassemble it and tune it to produce shavings thin enough to allow light to pass through them.
CVHS Veritas Plane Safety Page (use the instruction manuals to guide you with proper plane set-up.)
HAND-MADE DOVETAIL JOINT: Using a chisel and hand saw, make a simple dove tailed joint having at least two tails and three pins. It is strongly recommended that you watching this video (despite its length) and guiding your work by it. You DO NOT need to join two pieces of different thicknesses.
How to Cut a Dovetail Joint by Hand -- by Matt Estlea.
BOX JOINT USING THE SHAPER ORIGIN: Use a Shaper Origin and Shaper Workstation to make a good fitting box joint having at least seven pins at the joint.
Students may work on these things in any order they wish. Ideally, students will spread themselves out across the projects to reduce equipment bottlenecks.
Chisel Sharpening Proficiency (DUE: 4/15)
Hand Plane Sharpening Proficiency (DUE: 4/15)
Plane Shavings (DUE: 4/15)
Hand-Made Dovetail Joint (DUE: 4/15)
Box Joint Using the Shaper Origin (DUE: 4/15)
OBJECTIVE: Students will identify projects to work on for the next semester.
Items that must be finished for this semester:
A finished mortise & tenon mallet (if you didn't finish it last semester). This will be worth 100 points (for Woods 2 only).
All smaller lab exercises and assigned homework.
300 points worth of additional projects of your choice, however EACH PROJECT MUST INCORPORATE THE USE OF TECHNIQUES OR TOOLS THAT ARE NEW TO YOU. OBTAIN VERBAL APPROVAL BEFORE STARTING WORK ON ANY POP.
Students were asked to look at the Woodworking Project Examples Website (you must be logged into your school Google Account to access this website) to identify 300 points of projects to work on for this next semester. While this website has categorized projects by point value, the final determination of the points to be awarded for any given project will come by agreement between the teacher and student. Generally, all 100-point projects can be made more complex, while aspects of larger projects on this website can be simplified.
For the first couple of weeks of this semester, students will be introduced to additional topics, tools, and techniques that might be helpful in completing their selected projects with a focus on sharpening and hand tools.

Students who do not feel like they will finish the large projects from 1st Semester prior to the end of the semester this Friday, are invited to complete this Post-Semester Work Contract Form (you will need to make your own copy of the form first before you can edit it). As explained in class,
Bring this completed form with you the next period of class.
Have Mr. K review it. If he approves, sign it. If he does not, adjust it until it is approved and then sign it.
Print a two-sided copy out here at school
Take it home and have your parents sign it.
Return it BEFORE the end of the semester (2/1/22).
Mr. K is willing to host students here at school on both Wednesday 2/2 and Thursday, 2/3 from 9 AM until 4 PM. Students with transportation issues who might need to stay later than 4 PM (or come in earlier than 9AM) should check with Mr. K -- he probably could accommodate as necessary.

DAILY JOURNAL: For the rest of the semester (through 2/1) there will be no journal entry required. Instead, students will be checking in with the teacher each period to discuss their end-of-the-semester timeline (see below).
SHOP CLEAN-UP ASSIGNMENTS HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND GO INTO EFFECT TODAY. PLEASE FIND AND UNDERSTAND YOUR NEW CLEAN-UP ASSIGNMENT . LINKS ARE AT THE TOP OF THIS CALENDAR PAGE.
By the end of the semester (per the dates indicated on the timeline/contract template linked below), each Woods 3 and 4 students must complete what they have already agreed to for the semester. Each Woods 2 student must have completed:
The Angled Box Project and all work prior to this in the class.
IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD TIME ON A LATHE: A completed mortise and tenon mallet.
IF YOU HAVE HAD TIME ON A LATHE: a Turned Bowl and a glued-up head, fully shaped handle, and wedge all sanded and ready for final assembly for the mortise and tenon mallet project.
Complete this Timeline / Contract Template (you will need to open it and select MAKE A COPY from the FILE menu in order to edit it) and have Mr. K check and approve it BEFORE printing it. Once it is approved, print it and bring it to him. He will keep these. In place of a daily journal each day, you are to obtain the hardcopy of this document, update it, and return it to Mr. K, discussing with him as necessary what you are going to do should you start falling behind on your plan.
TIMELINE / CONTRACTS WILL RECEIVE A GRADE AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER BASED UPON THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF TEACHER INITIALS EVERY DAY.
When the hardcopy of the Timeline/Contract has been turned in to Mr. K, students then went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand how to use the wood lathes.
DAILY JOURNAL: As you know, following a due date, you only have 14 days to get things turned in to earn any points. Even though turning things in after these 14 days will not yield you points (and will therefore not mathematically impact your current grade in the class), what is the value in still completing (in its entirety) and turning in all your missing work before the end of the semester? To correctly answer this question, you will need to consult the class syllabus (linked to the first day of this calendar way back in September).
FOLLOWING THIS JOURNAL ENTRY, STUDENTS ARE TO TURN IN THEIR JOURNALS TO CANVAS (the one document with all entries). If you want credit, you must submit today in class -- this is measuring your daily participation. Late submittals will not be accepted.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.
Daily Journal Check #2: Students are to submit to Canvas their daily journal that has been completed to this point. The journal should be submitted regardless of its state of completeness following today's entry. (DUE: Today when requested by the teacher in class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
OBJECTIVE: Students will make items with the wood lathes.
DAILY JOURNAL: WOODS 2: Answer these questions:
The head of your mallet will not be made from a single piece of wood. How will it be made?
What gets inserted into the end of the tenon of your handle?
The bandsaw should be used to make a kerf in your handle tenon for the wedge. What should be placed at the base of the kerf?
What tool does Mr. K suggest using to shape the handle of your mallet?
DAILY JOURNAL: WOODS 3 & 4: Go take a picture of your current project. Insert the picture into your journal document. Then describe what you hope to complete in the shop by the end of the period.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Located at the top of this webpage is a link to a lathe queue. This document will identify the days earmarked for you on one of the school's lathes. If you know in advance that you will be gone on one of your days and do not notify the teacher, you may need to come in outside of class to make up lost lathe time.
DAILY JOURNAL: Woods 2 Students were to answer these questions pertaining to the wood lathes discussed yesterday:
All adjustments but one must be made with the lathe at a complete stop. What is the exception?
How far should the tool rest be maintained from the material being worked? As the piece is turned, it becomes smaller. So what must be done on a regular basis to insure the proper spacing of the tool rest?
What speed should large diameter wood, large bowls, and rough or out-of-round materials be turned at? (The answer is not a specific number, but a general description.)
The tool rest should be adjusted so that the tool engages the wood ABOVE the center of the work. Why is this important?
Tools are used to remove larger amounts of material. Sanding can be done on the lathe as well. What must be done before you can sand your work on the lathe? What must be removed?
When removing wood from the inside of an object (like a bowl), one should always work on which side of the turning wood -- where it is moving up or coming down? Why?
When spindle turning something that will have varying diameters, describe the proper progression of work (which areas should be worked on first) to minimize the risk of the wood breaking during turning.
Why must the tool be resting on the tool rest BEFORE engaging the tool into the turning wood?
DAILY JOURNAL: Woods 3 and 4 Students: For your journal today, indicate what you hope to accomplish by the end of the period. Also, take a picture of your project and insert the picture into your journal for the day.
After completing their journals, students continued to work on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
OBJECTIVE: Students will make items with the wood lathes.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Bring Mr. K your glued-up bowl blank AFTER the blank glue has dried. In other words, bring the blank to Mr. K to check off when it is ready to turn. Students will earn points for completing this step.
DAILY JOURNAL: There was no journal today. Instead, Mr. K demonstrated the safe use of the wood lathes to Woods 2 students. Woods 3 and 4 students worked on their projects.
After the lathe demonstrations, students continued to work on the priorities identified last period.
Bowl blank glued up and ready for turning (DUE 12/3)
OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
OBJECTIVE: Students will make items with the wood lathes.
DAILY JOURNAL: Read through what is posted on this calendar entry for today, and then answer these questions.
What is your #1 priority today AFTER completing this journal?
What does Mr. K want you to do next today?
If you are in Woods 3 or 4, you must complete 300 points in projects by the semester. By the end of the day, come to an agreement with Mr. K as to what you will complete, and how much each is worth, and record that for your journal.
WOODS 2 STUDENTS:
Your first priority for today is to complete your Illustrator file for your angled box engraving.
We are going to begin using the lathes. Since we only have four lathes (hopefully that will be increased to six shortly), we need to get people on them soon so everyone has an opportunity on them. So that people are ready when a lathe is available, all students are asked, as soon as they are done with their box Illustrator file, to complete through Step #6 on this Turned Bowl POP so they are ready to work on the lathes when their time comes.
Students will be expected to complete their angled box, a bowl, and a Mortise and Tenon Mallet (see the assignments to the right) by the end of the semester.
Notes on Calculating Board Feet (you may need to refer to this to complete your mallet POP).
Students wishing to do something other than a mallet must first get their idea approved by the instructor, and then write a complete POP using this POP template.
After journal completion, students worked on making their bowl blanks, and then returned to work on their angled boxes.
WOODS 2:
Read the Mallet Article -- "A Mallet Is A Must Have". The first three pages comprise the article. The last two pages have been taken from a second article and demonstrate possible ways to design a mallet. (DUE 11/29)
Mallet Project POP Assignment (DUE 12/7) This POP Grading Rubric will be used to grade this assignment.
OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
This year, whenever submitting a project for grading, each student is to first completely fill out this Project Grade Sheet. There will generally be hard copies of this document available in the classroom near the turn-in boxes. Students are to enter scores (0-10 points) for each category shown on this grade sheet, and are to complete the reflection on the back page. Then, the completed grade sheet and your physical project are given to your teacher.
DAILY JOURNAL: Answer the following questions in your journal after reading the Project Grade Sheet linked below:
Are all the criteria listed on the Project Grade Sheet strictly based on skill at woodworking? Explain thoroughly.
What is on the back of the Project Grade Sheet?
Who places scores on the Project Grade Sheet?
After journal completion, students worked on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students watched this Video On Breadboard Ends. This, or a similar technique, is essential when gluing panels up in a cross-grain fashion. According to the video:
What factor causes wood to move as described in the video?
What would happen if glue were placed along the entire length of the board rather than just the middle third?
Why do you think people often will put breadboard ends on panels that have been laminated together? (Here, there isn't a correct answer Mr.K is looking for -- he wants to know what you personally think. Please put some thought into your response, and consider aesthetics, but don't just say it looks better. State specifically why, if that is what you are going to say.
After journal completion, students worked on their projects.

Students were shown the new Festool finish sanders and how they should be used. If gone, you can find information about these sanders on the Finish Sander Safety Page. Following this, students answered their journal questions.
DAILY JOURNAL: Respond to these questions:
How many different types of Festool finish sanders does the school have, and what is the primary difference between them?
Why do we want to try and keep the same sand paper on a given sander? What is the advantage of doing this?
When using the new sanders, the vacuum should be set to which setting, manual or Auto?
When finished with today's journal entry, turn your journal into Canvas.
After journal completion, students worked on their projects.
Daily Journal Check #1: Students are to submit to Canvas their daily journal that has been completed to this point. The journal should be submitted regardless of its state of completeness by the end of the period. (DUE: Today by the end of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their first project: the Angled Box Project.
DAILY JOURNAL: Respond to this question: Do you have a personal project(s) you would like to work on? If so, what is it -- describe it fully, including the approximate size of the project you have in mind. What would the project given you an opportunity to learn that you did not learn before? Be forewarned -- if you do get to do your own project, you must be able to justify it by incorporating new techniques, joinery, or other things that will expand your skill as a woodworker.
After journal completion, students worked on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: All students will continue work on their first projects.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were directed to open up a blank Google Doc, and then save it as their Woodworking Daily Journal. Starting today, the daily routine to start each class should look like this:
Go to your locker.
Remove your safety glasses.
Place your phone into your locker (if you don't have a phone, come get a NO-PHONE token from Mr. K). Mr. K will be taking attendance based on phones / tokens within the lockers.
Open your Woodworking Daily Journal and add a heading with today's date below previous entries.
Navigate to this web page. Under DAILY JOURNAL, complete what is requested of you, placing it right into your Woodworking Daily Journal.
When finished, usually you can then proceed to the shop to work on projects unless Mr. K indicates otherwise.
You will keep adding to your journal each day. Doing this will allow Mr. K to get the class started and take attendance while you are learning/reviewing/completing something that is needed.
If you are absent from class, you must still complete your daily journal.
You will submit your daily journal periodically to Canvas for grading (you will be told when). Not every entry will receive a grade. Missing entries will receive a zero for that journal assessment.
For today's entry, copy and paste all of these numbered items listed beneath "DAILY JOURNAL" into your journal.
Finish reading the last two bullet points below.

ANNOUNCEMENT: We will not be able to use the shop today as the main duct for the dust collector imploded on Friday. Your instructor has been told that the system should be operational by Wednesday. Items and activities for today are things we would normally cover in class anyway . . . they are just occuring a bit earlier in the year.
Hand tools are a must if you wish to produce high quality woodworking. That said, hand tools only help you if they are sharp, and kept sharp. Today's focus is on the use of hand planes, chisels, and card scrapers, and how to keep them sharp.
Mr. K demonstrated the use of hand planes. Following, students all attempted to use one of the school's hand planes. Many required either adjustments or sharpening.
Next, in the shop Mr. K showed students how to use the Tormek T-8 system to sharpen chisels and plane blades. Students will be given a quiz on this system next period so students were encouraged to pay attention, ask questions, and take notes. Students will be allowed to use one page of hand-written notes during the quiz. The manual and additional information for the Tormek T-8 is located on the safety page (under the "Maintenance Equipment and Tools" subpage / heading).
The steps and procedures Mr. K discussed are summarized here: Steps for Sharpening Hand Plane Blades and Chisels. These were discussed now that students had been shown the Tormek System.
