ANNOUNCEMENT: Students were reminded that when projects are glued up and left on a table clamped to dry, that they must find a time to come in, unclamp, and put their project away. From now on, students should add on the note they leave with their project with their name and the time it was clamped, an indication of when they will come in to put it away. Since so few students have been doing this, Mr. K is forced to start taking a point off the final project score each time a student fails to deal with their project and just leaves it out. Comments will be placed in Canvas to keep track of this. If a student cannot come back in to put their project away, they may talk with Mr. K and he will be happy to put it away for you, but the student needs to take responsibility and talk to Mr. K.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Students who complete all their work in the shop and find themselves with nothing to do because they have not completed a POP for a personal project, should immediately come to Mr. K -- he will give you a project to work on.
ANNOUNCEMENT: The CV talent show on 4/8 will have a static display of the student-created projects display during the intermission. Mr. K encourages students to enter their completed work for judging. If interested, please get your submission to Ms. Stone's room by 4/4.

OBJECTIVE: Students will understand how to use the Shaper Origin CNC router in woodworking projects.
Mr. K discussed / demonstrated the preparation of a board for use in a project. This has already been discussed and demonstrated in class, but it has been observed that many students are forgetting the basic steps:
Select enough wood (ideally from a single board).
Use the bandsaw and/or jig saw to get pieces as small as possible but that are still at least 12" long.
Joint a face of each board.
Joint an edge of each board (with the jointed face held against the fence of the jointer).
Plane each board to final thickness (with the jointed side of the board face down).
Eventually, the last edge can be cut off on the table saw, however this does not necessarily need to be done right away. It depends upon what part of the wood you wish to use. Often, you can simply cut pieces from your board to width without contending with the un-jointed edge.

SHOP CLEAN-UP ASSIGNMENTS HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND GO INTO EFFECT TODAY. PLEASE FIND AND UNDERSTAND YOUR NEW CLEAN-UP ASSIGNMENT . LINKS ARE AT THE TOP OF THIS CALENDAR PAGE.
By the end of the semester (per the dates indicated on the timeline/contract template linked below), each student must have completed:
The Sanding Block Project and all work prior to this in the class.
A Cutting Board.
IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD TIME ON A LATHE: Either the Initial Box (Initial Box Project POP. Initial Box Project Drawing) or the Floating Face Clock Project (Floating Face Clock Project POP. Floating Face Clock Project Drawing. Illustrator File for Acrylic)
IF YOU HAVE HAD TIME ON A LATHE: a Turned Bowl and complete up through POP Step #18 on the Initial Box OR POP Step #24 on the Floating Face Clock Projects.
Complete this Timeline / Contract Template (you will need to open it and select MAKE A COPY from the FILE menu in order to edit it) and have Mr. K check and approve it BEFORE printing it. Once it is approved, print it and bring it to him. He will keep these. In place of a daily journal each day, you are to obtain the hardcopy of this document, update it, and return it to Mr. K, discussing with him as necessary what you are going to do should you start falling behind on your plan.
TIMELINE / CONTRACTS WILL RECEIVE A GRADE AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER BASED UPON THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF TEACHER INITIALS EVERY DAY.
When the hardcopy of the Timeline/Contract has been turned in to Mr. K, students then went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.

DAILY JOURNAL: As you know, following a due date, you only have 14 days to get things turned in to earn any points. Even though turning things in after these 14 days will not yield you points (and will therefore not mathematically impact your current grade in the class), what is the value in still completing (in its entirety) and turning in all your missing work before the end of the semester? To correctly answer this question, you will need to consult the class syllabus (linked to the first day of this calendar way back in September).
FOLLOWING THIS JOURNAL ENTRY, STUDENTS ARE TO TURN IN THEIR JOURNALS TO CANVAS (the one document with all entries). If you want credit, you must submit today in class -- this is measuring your daily participation. Late submittals will not be accepted.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.
Daily Journal Check #2: Students are to submit to Canvas their daily journal that has been completed to this point. The journal should be submitted regardless of its state of completeness following today's entry. (DUE: Today when requested by the teacher in class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize shop equipment to expand their woodworking skills.
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand how to use the wood lathes.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were shown this video: How a Woodworking Master Makes Bowls -- Handmade. The video was stopped periodically to discuss the general process of turning a bowl. Following the video, students answered the following questions:
What is more important in turning objects, strength or technique? Explain.
What did Ashley finally do that allowed her to get truly good at turning bowls?
Ashley indicates that she generally turns green wood (wood from trees that just recently came down). Why does she only partially turn each bowl first, place wax on it, and then let it sit for a long, long time before finishing it?

What factor causes wood to move as described in the video?
What would happen if glue were placed along the entire length of the board rather than just the middle third?
Why do you think people often will put breadboard ends on panels that have been laminated together? (Here, there isn't a correct answer Mr. K is looking for -- he wants to know what you personally think. Please put some thought into your response, and consider aesthetics, but don't just say it looks better. State specifically why, if that is what you are going to say.

OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize shop equipment to expand their woodworking skills.
OBJECTIVE: Students will make items with the wood lathes.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Located at the top of this webpage are links to a lathe queue. This document will identify the days earmarked for you on one of the school's lathes. If you know in advance that you will be gone on one of your days and do not notify the teacher, you may need to come in outside of class to make up lost lathe time.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were to answer these questions pertaining to the wood lathes discussed yesterday:
All adjustments but one must be made with the lathe at a complete stop. What is the exception?
How far should the tool rest be maintained from the material being worked? As the piece is turned, it becomes smaller. So what must be done on a regular basis to insure the proper spacing of the tool rest?
What speed should large diameter wood, large bowls, and rough or out-of-round materials be turned at? (The answer is not a specific number, but a general description.)
The tool rest should be adjusted so that the tool engages the wood ABOVE the center of the work. Why is this important?
Tools are used to remove larger amounts of material. Sanding can be done on the lathe as well. What must be done before you can sand your work on the lathe? What must be removed?
When removing wood from the inside of an object (like a bowl), one should always work on which side of the turning wood -- where it is moving up or coming down? Why?
When spindle turning something that will have varying diameters, describe the proper progression of work (which areas should be worked on first) to minimize the risk of the wood breaking during turning.
Why must the tool be resting on the tool rest BEFORE engaging the tool into the turning wood?
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize shop equipment to expand their woodworking skills.
OBJECTIVE: Students will make items with the wood lathes.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Bring Mr. K your glued-up bowl blank AFTER the blank glue has dried. In other words, bring the blank to Mr. K to check off when it is ready to turn. Students will earn points for completing this step.
DAILY JOURNAL: There was no journal today. Instead, Mr. K demonstrated the safe use of the wood lathes.
After the lathe demonstrations, students continued to work on the priorities identified last period.
Bowl blank glued up and ready for turning (DUE 12/3 for 1st, 12/6 for 6th and 8th)
OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize shop equipment to expand their woodworking skills.
OBJECTIVE: Students will make items with the wood lathes.
DAILY JOURNAL: Read through what is posted on this calendar entry for today, and then answer these questions.
What is your #1 priority today AFTER completing this journal?
What does Mr. K want you to do next if you are done, or when you get done, with your sanding block?
Which of the other two projects do you wish to complete this semester? Or do you have a different project you would rather do? Explain why you want to do the project you select.
Your first priority for today is to complete your Illustrator file for your cutting board engraving. TURN THE ILLUSTRATOR FILE INTO CANVAS WHEN FINISHED WITH IT.
We are going to begin using the lathes. Since we only have four lathes (hopefully that will be increased to six shortly), we need to get people on them soon so everyone has an opportunity on them. So that people are ready when a lathe is available, all students are asked, as soon as they are done with the Sanding Block Project, to complete through Step #6 on this Turned Bowl POP. Students who have already started their cutting boards are asked to stop their cutting board project and work on their bowl blanks so they are ready to work on the lathes when their time comes.
Students will be expected to complete their cutting board, a bowl, and one of the other two projects listed below by the end of the semester. Students wishing to do something other than one of these two projects must first get their idea approved by the instructor, and then write a complete POP using this POP template.
Option 1: Initial Box Project POP. Initial Box Project Drawing.
Option 2: Floating Face Clock Project POP. Floating Face Clock Project Drawing. Illustrator File for Acrylic (You may download and use this last file to cut your acrylic to size and make the hole in it. You will want to make sure the hole size and the size of the square to be cut are correct for your actual clock).
So, the order in which you should work on things today:
Complete the journal.
Complete the Illustrator file for the cutting board and turn it in.
Complete the Sanding Block Project.
Complete through Step #6 on the Turned Bowl Project.
Complete a cutting board.
Complete a bowl and one of the two other projects (Initial Box, or Floating Face Clock).

OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize shop equipment to expand their woodworking skills.
Students were shown the new Festool finish sanders and how they should be used. If gone, you can find information about these sanders on the Finish Sander Safety Page. Following this, students answered their journal questions.
DAILY JOURNAL: Respond to these questions:
How many different types of Festool finish sanders does the school have, and what is the primary difference between them?
Why do we want to try and keep the same sand paper on a given sander? What is the advantage of doing this?
When using the new sanders, the vacuum should be set to which setting, Manual or Auto?
After journal completion, students worked on their projects.
Watch the four videos located on the CV Safety Page for the Laser Engravers under the "ILLUSTRATOR BASICS (Learning Videos) heading. You will need this information for the next period's assignment. (DUE: 11/16 for 1st, 11/17 for 6th & 8th) Students in IDEA or PST only need to watch the last video on importing graphics (but the others would not hurt as review.
OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize shop equipment to expand their woodworking skills.

DAILY JOURNAL: Reflecting on last class, answer the questions and do the following:
What glue do you want to use when you glue up boards for your cutting board, and why do you want to use this kind?
List three specific things that are critical in order to achieve strong glue-joints for your cutting board.
Look on Canvas and see if you have a grade for your push stick and First Cuts Project. If you do not, please come talk to your teacher.
Turn in your journal to Canvas. It MUST be turned in today after you complete today's entry.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Push sticks and First Cuts Projects should be turned in by now for grading.
ANNOUNCEMENT: The sanding block should be completed and is due 11/10 for 1st Period, and 11/15 for 6th and 8th Periods.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.
Daily Journal Check #1: Students are to submit to Canvas their daily journal that has been completed to this point. The journal should be submitted regardless of its state of completeness by the end of the period. (DUE: Today by the end of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand how to glue up flat-panel laminations.
DAILY JOURNAL: There was no daily journal today. If you are gone, please read through the Flat Panel Lamination Instructions below.
For your cutting board, your design should have all grain for all pieces going in the same direction. If you have grain from adjacent pieces at right angles to one another, you have two problems that must be addressed. First, you have an end-grain glue joint. The joint will be weak and starved for glue unless you use sizing (Mr. K can explain) on the joint. Secondly, this joint will want to rip itself apart because remember -- wood expands more across the grain than along the grain. There are techniques you can use to make such a joint work, but it will require additional steps. To avoid this, try and keep all the grain of all your pieces of your cutting board going in the same general direction.
Mr. K demonstrated proper lamination technique. The process of laminating boards together is described here: Flat Panel Lamination Instructions.
Be sure to use Titebond III glue (the glue in the bottle with the green cap) when gluing your cutting boards together. This is waterproof.
You will want to use Butcher Block Conditioner as your finish -- it is food-safe.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to create and read orthographic drawings of objects.
OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to safely utilize both the jointer and the planer.
ANNOUNCEMENT: At this point, Mr. K cannot be managing who hasn't completed which safety test while class is taking place. Therefore, as of today, if you are missing any safety tests or corrections, you MUST complete them before you will be allowed to work in the shop. This of course will reduce the time you have to work in the shop. This lost time could be avoided by coming in at lunch, but in general students have not done this. And now, there is just too many people missing safety pieces for Mr. K to be able to safely manage in the moment during class. Videos have been placed on the safety pages that will substitute for the online demonstrations if a student missed the safety discussion when the equipment was discussed in class. Before they can take the test in class, a student must BOTH watch the posted safety video(s), and read through the specific safety guidelines document linked on the safety page.
DAILY JOURNAL: Answer the following questions in your journal after reading the Project Grade Sheet linked below:
Are all the criteria listed on the Project Grade Sheet strictly based on skill at woodworking? Explain thoroughly.
What is on the back of the Project Grade Sheet?
Who places scores on the Project Grade Sheet?
This year, whenever submitting a project for grading, each student is to first completely fill out this Project Grade Sheet. There will generally be hard copies of this document available in the classroom near the turn-in boxes. Students are to enter scores (0-10 points) for each category shown on this grade sheet, and are to complete the reflection on the back page. Then, the completed grade sheet and your physical project are given to your teacher.
Students were given a hard copy of this Long-Grain Cutting Board POP. Students were to staple their drawing for their cutting board to the back of this and place their name on this sheet. This POP is to be used for teacher initials while working on their cutting boards.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.
Long-Grain Cutting Board POP This is the next project in the class. (DUE: TBA)

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to safely utilize both the jointer and the planer.
DAILY JOURNAL: In your journal for today, indicate what you are to work on as homework, including when it is due and what the requirements are. DO NOT JUST CUT AND PASTE THIS TIME.
Mr. K discussed the school's jointer and planer. These pieces of equipment make a board flat and straight. Usually, both of these pieces of equipment are needed for any project, including the upcoming cutting board project. Students will be taking tests on these pieces of equipment during the next class period.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.
Cutting Board Drawing -- students should produce a drawing (with three aligned views and complying with the dimensioning standards previously discussed in class) of a cutting board they wish to make. Their cutting board must be no bigger than 16" x 12" x 3/4", and must have at least four pieces of wood. There drawings should indicate the species of each piece of wood on their drawing. (DUE 10/25 for 1st, 10/26 for 6th & 8th, due a the beginning of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will utilize some of the basic shop equipment for their first projects.
DAILY JOURNAL: Students were directed to open up a blank Google Doc, and then save it as their Woodworking Daily Journal. Starting today, the daily routine to start each class should look like this:
Go to your locker.
Remove your safety glasses.
Place your phone into your locker (if you don't have a phone, come get a NO-PHONE token from Mr. K). Mr. K will be taking attendance based on phones / tokens within the lockers.
Open your Woodworking Daily Journal and add a heading with today's date below previous entries.
Navigate to this web page. Under DAILY JOURNAL, complete what is requested of you, placing it right into your Woodworking Daily Journal.
When finished, usually you can then proceed to the shop to work on projects unless Mr. K indicates otherwise.
You will keep adding to your journal each day. Doing this will allow Mr. K to get the class started and take attendance while you are learning/reviewing/completing something that is needed.
If you are absent from class, you must still complete your daily journal.
You will submit your daily journal periodically to Canvas for grading (you will be told when). Not every entry will receive a grade. Missing entries will receive a zero for that journal assessment.
For today's entry, copy and paste all of these numbered items listed beneath "DAILY JOURNAL" into your journal.
Finish reading the last two bullet points below.
When students get to the stage of needing to epoxy their machine screws into their bottom piece of the sanding block, they are to wait until there are at least three students ready for that stage. Epoxy will be mixed at the same time and used by all students together to minimize wasted epoxy.
Students finishing their sanding blocks can begin work on making a drawing of a cutting board that is no bigger than 16" x 12" x 3/4". Students can use eastern cherry, black walnut, white oak, or eastern maple for their cutting boards. Each cutting board must use, at minimum, four pieces of wood.
Students went to the shop to continue to work on their projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to create a three-view orthographic projection of a 3D object, and will be able to correctly dimension it.
Students will be doing two initial projects as they get accustomed to the basic equipment. Students will create the sanding block depicted below in the drawing, and students will make a push stick for the shop (which will be described later). For now, we will focus on the Sanding Block Project. Here is a drawing of the sanding block you will be making: Sanding Block Project -- Drawing . Take a moment and look this drawing over.
One of the biggest challenges for some beginning woodworkers is simply knowing how to communicate and interpret the physical details and features for items to be made. Technical communication is different than other forms of communication. Specifically, details matter, and clarity is critical. One of the easiest ways to accomplish both is through the use of drawings. Drawings of 3D objects are made in a consistent fashion so that everyone readily understands what is being communicated. The predominant manner in which 3D objects are shown on 2D drawings is through the use of orthographic projections.
For 6th and 8th Periods, students were shown how to draw an orthographic drawing of a 3D object. Mr. K demonstrated the technique on the board. Students worked at the same time to create an orthographic drawing of the same 3D object provided by Mr. K. Mr. K collected this drawing completed by each student in class for use in a subsequent class.
Mr. K was tied up for 1st Period attempting to get the shop ready for student use. Students completed the same orthographic drawing exercise by watch the video linked at right demonstrating the construction of a third-angle orthographic projection.
1st Period: Watch this How to Make an Orthographic Projection Drawing Video (Mr K apologizes for the quality -- with more time, it certainly could be improved). While watching, use the piece of graph paper provided in class (but any paper will do if you are absent and want to do this at home), a pencil with an eraser, and a ruler with inch measurements and duplicate the three views you see Mr. K drawing in the video. Stop the video as needed while you do your drawing. You must use a straight-edge for all your lines, and it must be done neatly. Take a picture of the drawing that you produce and submit the picture in to Canvas. (DUE 9/23, at the beginning of class) DO NOT DISCARD YOUR DRAWING. WE WILL USE IT LATER THIS WEEK FOR ANOTHER ASSIGNMENT.
6th and 8th Periods: You will be walked through the creation of this drawing in class and will turn it in at the end of class. (DUE 9/24, at the beginning of class)
All Periods: After completing the orthographic drawing, students were to work on this Missing Lines Worksheet #1. A hard copy was provided in class. However, students wishing (or needing) to complete this electronically can click on the link\, go to the FILE menu and select MAKE A COPY to create a version of the file you can edit. Use the line tool to add all missing object and hidden lines that are not shown in the front, top, or right side views. The 3D views are not missing any lines. If completed electronically, submit this file to Canvas. (DUE 9/23 for 1st, 9/24 for 6th & 8th, at the beginning of class).
OBJECTIVE: Students will understand the different joinery options that exist when wishing to join two pieces of wood together.
Students worked to complete the assignment listed to the right. If this does not get completed, please complete as homework before the next period.
Complete this Joinery Options -- Pocket Screws, Dowels, and Biscuits on a new Google Doc. Submit your responses to Canvas. (DUE: 9/21 for 1st, 9/22 for 6th & 8th by the beginning of class)
OBJECTIVE: Students will master the general safety practices associated with use of the shop, as well as specific practices associated with the band saws, scroll saws, floor sanders, and spindle sanders.
